1. “Black Friday”, whatever that may mean, has only crept into Australia in the last four or five years. My time working retail was in the 1970s, so no. I’ve done Boxing Day sales and lived to tell the tale, though.

2. Yes. We go out to the Sporties for dinner and drinks. We are an informal lot.

3. No. Don’t inflict my cooking on the innocent.

4. No. Midsummer - Christmas Day is likely to be over 100 degrees.

1. Have you ever worked in a store on Black Friday? What was it like?
I worked retail in the 70’s so busy but nothing like now.

2. Do you have a holiday party at work? Is it more formal or casual?
Retired. Used to have a get together at a restaurant or someone’s house after work. Pretty casual.

3. Do you bake cookies for the holiday season? What kind?
Yes. Usually snowballs, crescents and sugar cookies.

4. Do you own a lot of holiday sweaters
One that I’ve had for years that I’d wear when I was working for our holiday sing a long. Never wear it now.

1. Just a restaurant and drug store. I was a teenager for both, so I really don't remember the crowds. Must've been fine.

2. Not at my current school. It has always depended on the principal. Always casual.

3. Yes - gingerbread, peppermint/choc. chip, and peanut blossoms usually. Sometimes I try new recipes.

4. Not a lot - I have about 5 for dress-up days at school and ugly sweater parties.

1. Yes, but it was an off sale liquor store. Everyone was happy.
2. Yes, our holiday party is casual.
3. Yes, cutout sugar cookies, peanut butter with chocolate star cookies, a molasses cookie and a chocolate cake cookie that my grandmother always made, butter spritz cookies, grandma's fudge, and homemade cranberry gumdrops.
4. Nope, not a single Christmas sweater in my closet.

1. No. My retail work was limited to summers after HS graduation and in my early 20’s.

2. I’m retired now. The schools I worked at always had a Christmas party. Usually at the Principal’s house or at a local restaurant.

3. I bake a lot for the holidays. I enjoy it and every year give our closest friends a selection of baked goods- Italian cookies, several other types of cookies, and breads.

4. I don’t own any holiday sweaters.

1. Nope, but I worked “the day after Thanksgiving” when I was a teenager and it was busy and fun.

2. Retired, but our parties were always casual and fun.

3. I used to bake holiday cookies (biggest fave were White Chocolate Christmas Crinkles), but now I avoid cooking (just not fun for me anymore).

4. I usually wear a red or green sweater. Last year I got this fun shirt (I’ll try to attach a pic).

I've only worked retail in the summer months.

2. Do you have a holiday party at work? Is it more formal or casual?
Most years we do not have a holiday party but when we do, it is casual.

3. Do you bake cookies for the holiday season? What kind?
My husband loves to bake and he does fudge, sugar cookies, and melting moments. My favorite to make are ginger creams.

4. Do you own a lot of holiday sweaters?
No sweaters for me.

1. No. I never worked retail.

2. This is only my second year at my current district so I have no idea. Last year there was nothing because of Covid. We were still fully remote. Before that, I had my own business and taught at many schools a week. I was never really a part of their faculty so never knew what they did.

3. I just started making Keto brownie cookies.

4. No.

1. Have you ever worked in a store on Black Friday? What was it like?
No. I don't even go to stores on Black Friday
2. Do you have a holiday party at work? Is it more formal or casual?
When I worked at schools, the holiday party was pretty casual. When I worked at a bank in my 20s, the holiday party was quite formal. I wonder if it still is.
3. Do you bake cookies for the holiday season? What kind?
I bake sugar spice trees, cherry snowballs, lemon thyme shortbread angels, traditional shortbread. All of them are one inch cookies which adults and children love--the adults because one tiny cookie doesn't cause guilt and children can have 3!
4. Do you own a lot of holiday sweaters?
No. I used to have a Christmas tree one but I can't find it anywhere. I have a vague recollection of giving it away

1. Back in my retail employment days, I'm sure I did 2 or 3 times as well as at least a few times when I worked at a call center.

2. Don't have to worry about those anymore these days, but back when I did, it was always a holiday luncheon DURING school hrs.

3. Not really, but if so, oatmeal raisin!

4. No ugle sweaters at all, but I a few festive ones and own a TON of regular ones...enough to have a small clothing shop, ha!

1. Yes. Many years. The only time i ever ventured to stores on black Friday. It was very busy, but not as bad as the Christmas return rush.

2. Always did as a teacher, usually informal, often at a restaurant, gift exchange. Did at my recent job, too. Usually formal. Don't at my current job.

3. Only did once when we did a cookie exchange. But my daughter actually did the baking. So i guess i revise my answer to no.

4. No. Used to have a lot of sweatshirts that were holiday themed. My mom was on a sweatshirt decorating kick for a few years. I loved them. My k-1 students really loved them

Recollections of work at Toys R Us

1. Have you ever worked in a store on Black Friday? What was it like?
Before I started teaching I worked several years for Toys R Us as a seasonal employee. I don't think they started calling it "Black Friday" yet so my recollections are more about the general shopping season. It was funny to have people come up to me singing the commercial when they could't remember the toy's specific name. The problem? I very seldom watched children's TV so I didn't know the commercials, except for the most popular toys.
As for the height of the season, the ugly part of it was the way customers tore apart the boxes and left things a huge mess when we had to work in another part of the store. Some would even just roll their carts over the opened boxes that were left on the floor! The last few weeks closer to Christmas, the store stayed open til midnight, so we sometimes had to stay at work till 1 or 2 AM to clean, clear out and restock the shelves. We had memorized the entire catalog of never-ending Christmas songs so we sang while we worked. Even tho we were so tired, it was actually fun to work with no customers! (Ohhh to be so young again!) I have very clear memories of working full days as a cashier when the lines went ALL THE WAY to the back of the huge store (with 10-15 cashier lanes open! Amazon definitely wasn't around back then!). Those days helped me acquire the patience that later came in handy with parents and students. I just took one customer at a time and tried to be as patient as I could to make the customer's shopping experience less stressful.

2. Do you have a holiday party at work? Is it more formal or casual?
Our parties were evening potlucks at a person's home or at a local restaurant.

3. Do you bake cookies for the holiday season? What kind?
I used to bake a wide variety of cookies, but these days I mostly stick to the basic oatmeal or chocolate chip cookies.

4. Do you own a lot of holiday sweaters?
Not even one.

I have never worked retail.
We usually had a holiday party at one of the teachers homes but I was often too tired to even think about going my last few years of teaching.
For the holidays I always bake gingerbread cookies and sometimes sugar cookies.
I own a couple of tasteful holiday tops but no crazy holiday sweaters!

1. I’ve never even been in a store on Black Friday except for a supermarket. I don’t like shopping in a crowded place.

2. All the staff parties I’ve gone to over the years have been casual to semi dressy. Never formal.

3. I always bake some cookies for the holidays. Tomorrow I’ll bake some chocolate chip cookies for the nice young man who volunteered to help me put up some Christmas lights. I also like to make cutout Christmas cookies. I use whole wheat pastry flour for everything I bake.

4. I don’t own any holiday sweaters. I live in the SoCal desert (Palm Springs area) where sweaters are rarely needed.

1. Have you ever worked in a store on Black Friday? What was it like?
No, I’ve never worked retail.

2. Do you have a holiday party at work? Is it more formal or casual?
We did. It was always at someone’s home and i always said “It’s not a party til Mrs. Keltikmom comes over dressed.” There was no dress code.

3. Do you bake cookies for the holiday season? What kind?
No. But, I might give it a go this year. My mom handed down a recipe for “Scottish Matrimonial Cakes.” Sort of a mix between shortbread and toffee.

4. Do you own a lot of holiday sweaters?
I used to when I was working. Not any more.

Cannot recall any Black Friday employment ~ maybe a Kmart job in the distant past

I work as a substitute teacher so no party for me. Sometimes I am somewhat included.

As a rule I do not bake holiday cookie. I used to make gingerbread cookies when my kids were younger.

I have zero Christmas sweaters.
