Advice on Leaving

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello PT,
A lot of the teachers are planning to leave my school for reasons of unprofessional administration, lack of support and manipulation tactics. My question is, I will be preparing my resume, and signing up for the local teacher's job fair (which my school will not be aware of because it is through the county, not the charter school system), should I ask for letters of recommendations before or after I get another teaching job? I was planning on stating that I want to go back to the county due to them investing more in my retirement, being closer to home.

Thank you

I would ask for them before so you have them in hand.

I did this a few years ago, because I was simply updating my resume. It made some people nervous that I intended to leave, but that really was my business. Hmmm...maybe itís time to ask for letters again. Youíve got me thinking.

Iíve had four principals in 26 years. The first one lost his job because of an affair with a student. He is now in a mental hospital. It is too late to ask him for a letter and Iím not sure I would want interviewers trying to contact him.

The second one was diagnosed with cancer and died in less than 6 months. I put off asking him once he was diagnosed because he was so sick and it seemed awkward asking for a letter.

The third one is writing a letter now. The fourth one Iíve had less than a year.

Iím applying for jobs now and one system wants letters from my last three principals. They also want the phone number for the teacher I did my student teaching with 27 years ago. Ummmm, she died 20 years ago.

Iím not sure how all of this will play out as far as job prospects but I hope you will learn from me and ask now.

I simply sent my former principal an email stating I wasnít planning on going anywhere but wanted to update my resume, etc. I simply asked her if she would write me a letter of recommendation.

there is a difference with a former principal vs. the one I have right now. I can understand that.

Thank you

Ask in person!

I think that it shows more initiative and would make it harder to say no or ignore the request.
