Clip to ScrapBook #1

I teach kindergarten and my school has been using Eureka Math for a couple of years now. My kids have struggled with this program being entirely whole group. Itís hard to give attention to those who are struggling while pushing on kids who are getting it. Also, kids this age have trouble sitting for the whole group and itís like pulling teeth getting through a lesson and Iím tired of fighting it every day.
I dread math every afternoon .
Does anyone have any tips? Has anyone found a way to incorporate centers while still using this program? I think if I could figure out how to get to all parts Iíd the lesson by doing a center approach math time would be so much more effective .

Have you tried teaching using the workshop model?

Donít know the program, but I can only imagine. We had Bridges and it was brutal. My only suggestion would be to move your math time to first thing I. The morning or immediately after recess.

Second possibility, maybe once a week, have the above grade level kids partner up with lower kids as tutors. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnít.

Iím doing it in centers.
Whole group: application problem, set the timer for 3 minutes, they work, then we talk about it.
Concept development: whole group sometimes if itís easy, small group if itís with manipulatives, but a short mini lesson whole group before we start.
Then rotations: 4 centers of 15 minutes each.

1) tech with math
2) math game with a parent (fluency activities like the make it equal bean game)
3) math with me: problem set and/or concept development
4) building/free play (pattern blocks, snap cubes, legos, blocks, scales, etc.)

Itís my second year and it seems to work ok. It takes awhile at the beginning to do it.

I taught Eureka Math in first grade for a few years before I retired. If you have access to IPads there is a program that goes along with Eureka called Zearn.
I would teach the small warm ups whole group and also the Sprints. We did the application problems on individual white boards.
Then I did took half the class to do the concept development and the rest of the class did Zearn. Then we switched.
Each week I mixed up the groups. I found it easier not to have all my low students in the same group, especially for using manipulatives during the concept development. It helped to pair them with a stronger partner.
