Does anyone do Guided Math? If so, how do you do it? How effective is it?

I currently do not do it. However, I have over 20 kids in one room all day, and no special education teacher for learning support in my building. About six of my students are below grade level for math and are struggling as the concepts are getting harder as we go along. The students who are on grade level or higher can get slowed down when I am doing whole class teaching of the concepts and I would like to tap more into their potential.

I've seen Guided Math in action in another school and was unsure about how beneficial some of the center activities were. Seemed like for some students it was a good chance to sort of play and practice math skills but also sort of talk at the same time.

My program is GoMath. Any suggestions or feedback would be welcomed.

math, but I did do guided math. The small group work does help many students to focus and learn more.

Students spent 20 to 25 minutes with me for the guided lesson using our text book.

Another rotation was to work on fluency. This was done in a variety of ways. Games, flash cards, online fact practice, worksheet fact practice were used for this rotation.

Another rotation focused on word problem solving. This was sometimes done online and sometimes with worksheets and sometimes manipulatives. I also had students work on vocabulary for math during this rotation.

I am having the same problem, add to that the 5 lowest students actually cannot do things on their own (I have to scribe for them) so my problem would be what do THOSE kids do when they are not with me.

Also, don't forget to search for task cards. THe user UNSEEN has hundreds of task card available her for free, and if you cannot find something she will usually be able to make it for you.

Thanks! Since my last post, I have been giving Guided Math a try for some of my math classes. We do a computer center to practice math facts and problem solving, an independent center to work on problem solving and computation skills at seats, small group time with me, and partner work around the room to practice facts and skills. It took some organizational and management time to get the four groups of students knowing where they were rotating to and to do that quietly, but it is coming along now, and they seem to really like it. I have an hour for math each day so each rotation is 15 minutes.

I like it because I am able to differentiate for the leveled groups and give the higher kids a challenge. It could be frustrating during whole group because those kids sort of get pushed to the side when I have to always be with the lower students during independent work.

I will post more thoughts later in the year how it is going.
