Literature Circles are Great!

I do literature circles with my 8th grade classes and we all enjoy it. I have done it where kids are in groups of 4-6, and each group reads a different book; and I have done it where the class reads the same book, but the kids work in groups of 4-6.

In order to participate in a literature circle discussion, the student has to have completed the prep work prior to the class time. Any student who did not do the prep work needs to do the assignment he neglected while the perpared students discuss.

I have the kids write open ended questions and make connections to begin the circles. I add more requirements as the students learn to do each effectively.

It is also important for the kids to refelct on their learning experience and to evaluate their discussions.

Good luck!

I haven't read these novels, but a teacher I work with did a compare/contrast using The Outsiders and (I think) The Fallen. She said that is was very successful and that her mixed level students really enjoyed both novels.
