Writing Topics

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I've been teaching writing with a combination of the Write Traits program and Writer's Workshop. We do a trait of writing and the boys write a pc. of writing for each trait. They are then marked using the rubric for that trait.

I'm having trouble with the topics the boys come up with. As much as we want them to come up with their own topics. some of them are terrible. Plus, I teach all boys and am sick of hearing about football, baseball, etc. ALL the time.

Anybody have some great writing topics/prompts for me?!

Thanks so much! I love everything I find on this site!

Have them dream up their own ice cream sundae. Then they should draw it in color and label as a diagram. Then write a descriptive essay describing this new treat. Use spatial order by describing it from top to bottom as you eat it. Or, describe it bottom to top as you build it. This would be a good one to use for organization.

Give them each an Oreo. Tell them they are going to describe the Oreo using all five of their senses. Have them do some prewriting under each of the five senses. Start with sight, then feel, then smell and finally sound and taste. I introduce this writing assignment with the Oreo jingle online at their official website. We talk about why Oreo has a song and who wrote the jingle. I want them to know there are people who get paid for writing. I also discuss onomatopoeia with this assignment. Be sure they listen while they bite into their cookie so they will hear a crunch or snap.

Check out this website for writing. It gives you prompts, lessons based from books and it is all based around 6-traits writing!

Love the oreo idea. Do you read them that example that you attached or is that an example of what their work should resemble?
