Let's do random acts of kindness this weekend

I haven't been doing my Advent random acts of kindness because I have been sick for several weeks with bronchitis and it has taken all my strength just to get back and forth to work. This weekend I want to encourage everyone to do something for a stranger to send kindness out into the universe. You don't have to do it in celebration of Advent, it could be for Hanukah or Winter or the upcoming Solstice or because you are a teacher and this horrific event took place in a school or it could just be because you want to send out a little light to counteract the darkness and evil that is present in our world.

It doesn't have to cost you anything, it just has to be an anonymous act of kindness.

You could skip the parking spot near the door at Target so that someone else can have it.

You could put $5 or $10 in the Salvation Army Kettle.

You could pay for the coffee or the breakfast of the person behind you in the drivethru.

You could take a name off a giving tree at your church or library or store (BJs has a toy collection box near the exit).

You could put a tin of cookies on a neighbor's doorstep tonight for them to find in the morning.

Let's send some light out into our dark world.

The world is dark and light is precious - Kate DiCamillo

More ideas:

Pay the toll for the next car behind you on a pay road.

Pick up extra milk, eggs, bread, etc. For an elderly neighbor.

Bring in the trash cans for a neighbor.

Leave a fiver with the cafetria staff for students who forgot lunch.

Offer to cover duty for a coworker who looks like they need it.

Leave a small gift for firsties in your school just because you are glad to still have them.

This is a wonderful idea! Not surprising that a teacher thought of it.

Anonymouse - thank you for posting this. It was exactly what I needed to help me turn off the TV and do something positive out of this sadness.

I went out with the sole purpose of performing 28 random acts of kindness today, to send light out into the world.

Thank you!

I blogged about it today too:

I gave to the Salvation Army and let a woman with less groceries cut in from top me. (You would have thought I had given her the world.)

You all inspired me today. I am away with DH and DD for the weekend. We came along with my parents. My DH and I paid for my parents dinner tonight because they always insist on paying for ours. We also left a double tip for the waitress as she is paying her way through college. Also, left a nice tip for the girl who braided my daughter's hair at the pool. The look on her face was precious and she thanked us several times. I will work on more as we go shopping this evening. Thank you for the inspiration to do so much more.

Tonight we went for an early dinner and the family next to us had 4 noisy kids and a haggard looking mom. I smiled at them and danced in my booth to make them laugh. When they left I told the one of the little girls how well behaved she was. The mom apologized for how noisy they were and I assured her that the kids were perfectly well behaved and that we enjoyed sitting near them.

Anonymouse, Thanks so much for the suggestions. I copied your post to my Facebook page. I told everyone that my friend had posted this idea. My Facebook friends want me to give you a hug and say thanks! This is what we need to be doing this weekend to make our world a better place.

Man at Target doing random acts of kindness
Old 12-15-2012, 04:05 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #10

I just ran up to Target because I have family coming over to decorate my tree tomorrow and my lights don't work. The man in front of me on line had extra coupons for $10 off a $50 purchase and was passing them out to the people in line. The man in front of him had spent almost $900 and the man gave him a coupon. He turned around and gave the man with the coupons the gift card that he earned with his purchase.

tammynj had a great idea and she suggested that everyone who does an act of kindness does it to honor one of the victims by name.

My act of kindness today was in honor of the Special Education teacher, Anne Marie Murphy.

I returned two carts besides my own at the store tonight to help out the elderly man who had just emptied his cart and because I picked up a random one someone had left in the middle of the parking lot instead of taking it to the cart return. Thanks for the idea. It made me feel good. I also made it a point to be patient and smile at everyone who I came across.
