I'm out of here!

I'll be retiring on May 31 after 30 years of teaching. All of my years, have been in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade-all testing grades. I'm tired of all the assessments, of students and their obnoxious attitudes, parents and their petty opinions, and administrators and their unreasonable expectations. I'm just tired. I haven't told anyone in administration or on my grade level. So.... SURPRISE! I don't know what I'll be doing next, but it won't be dealing with testing, students, or administrators on a daily basis. SCORE!!!

Welcome aboard. It sounds like you retired for reasons similar to my own. One of the things I personally love about retirement is having my personal time back to do the things I want to do, or to just relax and o something like read for pleasure. I still get up early to take classes at my gym or to do other things, but it is a different kind of tired that I might feel from that. I'm sure a lot of thought went into your decision.

Enjoy your last weeks of teaching. Knowing that your time at school will have an expiration date will hopefully make those last requirements you have to fulfill a bit easier for you, and that you can savor your time with your class a bit more.

Wishing you a long, happy and healthy retirement!

Congratulations! Your reasons for retiring sound a lot like mine. I've been retired for three years and am happier than I have ever been. We're looking forward to welcoming you to this very happy board.

You will love retirement! Not the first or second day of summer, but eventually your new life will find you and you will enjoy not fretting over lesson plans, what to wear Monday morning or getting busted daydreaming in a staff meeting!

May you have good health! When I retired I broke my ankle, which led to surgery and a few months of getting back to normal. I dearly hope you enjoy yourself. I think you will come to enjoy the simple things in life, like sitting in your porch and just watching the butterflies go by. Go to a museum or a park. Join another retired friend for lunch. Life’s good usually when you’re retired.

You must be in Texas. You wrote exactly what I felt when I retired. I did tell the Assistant Principal the when the test time came around the she should not even think about calling me to sub.

Yep, I’m in Texas. The state that is obsessed with football and state assessments. I love watching football games, but STAAR tests-not so much!. I’ve been through TAAS, TAKS, and now STAAR. Enough is enough. Every year, it gets harder and harder to get the kids ready for those stupid reading tests, that aren’t even written on grade level.
How’s that for fighting a losing battle? Anyway..... May 31 can’t come soon enough. I’ve started packing up my stuff a little each day after school.

Sounds like you are happy. I donít know what I will be doing either next school year. I just know as you do that it will not involve testing!
I was afraid to confide to my co-workers but i did. It felt wonderful! I am starting to make the days count instead of counting the days. I find myself really enjoying the last of these tests and am smiling more each day. I hope you will too!
