K or 1st?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

This is my 1st year teaching kindergarten, and I'm having a great time. Before that, I taught 1st for many years and loved that, too.

At this school, the primary building (preK and K) is a separate building. As much as my P tries to make it all one campus, there are 2 distinct staffs. Both are wonderful, but the primary building doesn't feel like part of the "real" school.

Anyway, he asked me to consider teaching first next year. I'd be in the main building, in the thick of things, a part of the "real" school. He thinks my experience from NJ will do more good in the main building than here in K. I like my partner, but she's very old school and we don't plan together. In first I'd have a partner who is experienced and into the workshop models- she'd be great to work with.

I am leaning towards taking first (and my P knows best!) What are your thoughts? Kindergarten is "easier", but I may have more patience for first than K, and that's where all my experience lies. And I've really connected on a friend level with some in the main building, so I'd have more social time.

What would you do? (And yes, I'm going to make my lists of pros and cons.)

Move to first. I loved kinder...until I realized I no longer had the stamina or patience for it.

Kinders do take a lot of energy at the beginning of the year. And k is state mandated so all my 1st graders will have at least a year of school under their belts.

Based on the information you provided & your experience, I think
You should move to 1st .

It sounds like you will be able to be a happier teacher in the “real” school because you will have colleagues with a similar vision.

I'd go to first. Your principal REALLY knows you and knows the needs of the school. Your experience is in first, so the transition would be smooth.

I obviously can't tell you what to do, but from your post, it sounds like moving to first would be the way to go.

The only thing I might suggest if you do want to move to first is to talk to the P and or the staff if anyone else who has been there longer wants it. I'd hate for colleagues to get mad at you thinking that you were chosen to move over them because of your past experience with this p. If you ask/see if anyone else (who may have "seniority", though I know that's not really a thing in most Catholic Schools anymore), it might prevent any hard feelings.

It sounds like 1st would be a good fit, for many reasons. It might be that your P also really wants your experience on the 1st grade team.

I appreciate all your thoughts. I will talk to my P tomorrow and keep you posted. I do think the main building would be a better fit, and he knows me so well. If he asked me to think about it, heís already decided he wants me there. (I know him pretty well, too!)

Thanks again!

My only question is who I'd be working with, because I know who is retiring and I would work well with the teacher staying.

It seems he really did want to know if I'd be open to the change, and if I was adamantly opposed, he'd leave me in Kdgn. He still needs to see if anyone else is retiring and if anyone requests a change. He wants to be sure each grade level is strong and not leave any "holes."

I told him I'm happy in K, but would be excited to go to 1st and be part of the big building, with more colleagues to collaborate with. He said he will probably make a decision by the end of the month. As soon as he tells me if I'm moving or staying, y'all be the first to know!

Thanks for helping me think through this!

I taught 1st for 10 years before moving up to 3rd grade. I loved 1st grade! They are more independent than Kindergartners and you get to see so much growth throughout the year. If I was given the choice, I would move back.

Of the two, I personally prefer K to 1st, but I think from your description that I'd vote for 1st. It sounds like you have a good chance of getting it - good luck!!
