Hi. I'm looking to find out what everyone does for homework on a weekly basis. I am new to 4th grade this year and would just like to see what others are assigning theIr students. I am interested to see if I am assigning too little or too much. Thanks in advance for sharing!

I assign homework Monday-Thursday. It is always Spelling (they have a tic-tac-toe board where they choose three activities), Math, Reading (read and AR book; but I don't do a Reading Log), and Probe (this is a research topic I assign weekly). Grammar, Science and Social Studies I assign as needed. I would say my homework takes no more than 10-20 minutes a night to do (not including the reading). I just assign them to read a book but I don't say how many minutes to read.

In my school fourth grade is required to have 45 to 60 minutes of homework a day. I am also required to give math homework nightly. Generally my homework board looks like this.

Math- 10 to 15 problems from textbook or a workbook page
Spelling- study for test
English- 10 to 15 problems from textbook or a worksheet
Science/Social Studies- review notes

I also assign a monthly book report or other long term assignment that they know they need to be working on a little every night.

I often send home some sort of game to study for science, social studies and vocabulary which they get for a week at time that they can play with someone at home to review. This only happens every two to three weeks.

30 minutes of reading
Reading Log (response type of what they read, no signature)
Cum. Math Review
Reading Comprehension Practice Sheet

Due to our afterschool program, homework has to be lesson than 60 minutes, including the 30 minutes of reading.

That really sounds awful doesn't it.

Mon.-Thurs. Reading log (they read 30 min. and a parent signs it)

spelling activities-5 x each, ladder building, ABC order,
(sometimes they get a menu or tic-tac-toe spelling)

math book page, workbook page, or board problems

S.S and Science-if not finished in class (usually it can
be unless it is a student contract type project)

Fri. Reading log-read 30 and return signed on Monday
Get weekly progress report signed (it covers behavior
what was/was not turned in for the week.

Wow, I see I'm the exception here. I don't so much love homework!! We do Saxon math which has a side B that is to be homework. However, I have a study hall at the end of the day. If they don't waste their time they usually get it done. Same with other activities throughout the day. I have discovered that I always have several parents that cannot do the math we send home, so it's just best for them to do it here with me where they can receive the help they need. They've already spent 7 1/2 hours here and I want them to have time to be kids when they get home and have some family time for those few kids who do get to enjoy that. Anyway, that's my two cents worth!!
