This is how I use this resource:
I find and print articles related to a topic we are studying in class, could be art, reading, science, S. Studies. Right now we are reading a story about Presidents in our reading basal so I found articles about Presidents. I print out different articles on the same topic to match the lexile levels of my students.
On Monday we do a cold read. I have each student meet with me and read their article for 1 min while I do a running record. They keep the article in a folder and read it several times during the week. On Friday I do another running record to see their improvement. They graph this, it helps them see how practice improves their reading.
Each student has a Book of Knowledge (a composition notebook) to write a summary of their article after we do our Friday running record.
I only do the running records every other week, half the class one week and the other the next week. After practice the kids get the routine and it moves really quickly. The kids really enjoy the one on one reading time with me and they absolutely love graphing their reading improvement. It really helps them buy into that practice makes them better. However each student writes a summary on Friday whether it was their recording week or not.
