One activity that I LOVED to do, before administration got into their Dictator-style management mode, was to have the kids plan the cost of a Thanksgiving meal.
They would plan, we’d head to the grocery store, and figure it all out. If I had data from the previous year, we could compare prices, and investigate why costs went up or down.
A couple times, when funding was a bit more flush, I actually had the kids cook a meal. Brought in roasters, etc to make it happen. Even had a dad who worked at a bakery pick up the unbaked pies to bake at his place. Needless to say, my Math class in those years were the envy of the other 6th graders.
Ah, those were the days when a teacher could take a break from the books.
