Hi everyone, I'm back in the classroom after several years as a science teacher and looking for innovative ways to publish student writing. The units I'll be doing will include personal narratives, fiction, and poetry. I will definitely be doing class books and personal books, but was wondering if anyone has come up with another way to "spice up" publishing for some of these units. Thanks!

I order from a company called Bare Books. They are inexpensive and have the feel of a REAL book. My poetry unit is always published in these, and they make an excellent Mother's Day gift.

just Google them - they provide free bound books for each student! There are some caveats about how many classes have to make individual books vs class books, but it's a great project and the kids get real bound books for free! I use mine to have the kids write and illustrate poetry books.

Personal narratives make great friendly letters. They can mail them to a real live person.

I have my students publish poetry in 3 different ways: a book, spoken word poetry (they practice and present them very creatively), and as PowerPoints. With powerpoint, they can finally use all those bells and whistles they want to use in their science presentations: sound effects, word animation, slide animation... Sometimes a slide has 1 or 2 lines of poetry, and sometimes it has only 1 word. The kids can be very creative using it for emphasis.

We also make picture books as gifts to give to a younger child - or the parent of one.

Is a great website for publishing poetry online, reading and responding to others' work online, and I think you might be able to pay for a hard copy (not sure)
