DS (13) MH update: a summer of chillin and a school placement

DS continues to make progress. We are now in the “meat and potatoes” of his EMDR therapy and the sessions are emotional and tiring. The meds are pretty good and DS’s sleep patterns are more consistent with more hours of sleep strung together but at random times (which isn’t that “normal” for a teenage boy during the summer?) He is more social and has been hanging out with friends on a regular basis.

We meet with our home district special ed committee this Tuesday. We are sending him to an alternative school instead of our district high school. (He is an incoming freshman) The alternative school is much smaller (100 students K-12 vs our high school with 1500 students total) each class has 8 students, a teacher and an aide (8/1/1), and the high school portion is the size of a small elementary school so it’s not super overwhelming. And most importantly it’s a school, not a hospital or institutional/residential setting. The bus ride there is about 1/2 hour and unfortunately there is a stereotype against this school for having kids from “juvie” (juvenile detention center), but many of students are there for the smaller, more individual attention so they can learn. Plus DS is comfortable there and that’s what matters.

There are some good and some days that he’s in a “depressive vibe” as he calls it, but good is starting to outweigh the bad.

Thank you for reading this long post! I cannot thank my PTers enough for your ongoing support. Your comments and insight mean so much!

This sounds like a good placement for your DS. I’m glad that he’s responding well to therapy and enjoying friends. My college aged DD also has unusual sleep patterns so I can relate to that. Good luck.

A small setting made all the difference with my DS.
He's 28, married, and has a child!

I am so glad he has made progress! I think it is healthy that he knows when he feels the 'vibe' and that he can express that to you. I hope he has a great school year!

COngrats on the improvments.

My DS 16 also goes to a special non public school for kids with EBD-but I am lucky and we a few to choose from as long as we cast the net wide-there seems to exist a continuum of less to more severe EBD schools around here and one school that flat out refuses students with some behaviors as "they arent set up for these students levels of need". This meant that I could pick or refuse the school with the "juvie" pipeline. If it was my only choice-we would focus on the positives like you have and as long as DS is comfortable you'll have more success than you would else where no matter the student population.

We have the same class sizes and teacher/aide ratio you described but a heck of a lot longer on the bus.

Are his ERMS set up at the school? I swear, even at a special school I feel like I have to fight for these .

I am glad you are over the "hump". It was awful when my son was in and out of the hospital and dealing with involuntary holds and the like-Its something I wouldnt wish on my worst enemy. Know that you have someone continuing to pray for you from afar.

I am so glad to hear this report! The fact that he is comfortable and happy at the school speaks volumes and is so important. DD was in and out of schools constantly starting in 7th grade. I pray that it continues to go well. Glad to hear he is socializing some too!
