Anyone used this as a read aloud for their 3rd grade class? I have been debating on whether to use it or not. I have never read it to my class before, but I just finished reading it myself, and I personally loved it. I am worried some of my students might be too sensitive to the sadder parts, although I do think they would benefit from hearing it. Any thoughts?

I teach third grade and my students loved this book. There were very touching parts and a few tears shed. We were happy with the ending and I plan to read it every year.

My third graders LOVED this book. Our entire school is going to use it next year as a shared experience with ll students reading it with their classes. There is also a picture book about the same story for younger student by the same author...highly recommend this book. It is nice to see a book written with such beautiful language for this age group.

Just about to finish this book. My students have loved it and I will certainly read it again next year. They are lining up to borrow the book as soon as I read the last page.

My class loved it, and it spurred a lot of really important discussions afterwards. We all cried, but that was good too. I think it's important to let the students see how great literature affects us all.

My class ( 3rd and 4th) loved hearing the book and begged for read aloud often. The chapters were short enough that they could be read during a break from a lesson or before a transition time. I also found bookmarks with quotes from the book that I laminated for my class.
