How to use poetry
Old 07-19-2011, 12:24 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #8

This is my first year teaching. I love poetry and would love to incorporate it into the classroom. Can some of you veteran teachers please tell me how you use the poetry books in your classroom? I understand you probably read the poems together to go along with themes, and talk about rhyme, style etc. But what else? How often are they used?

Shared reading
Old 07-19-2011, 05:11 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #11

I will be using the poetry notebook I shared, one poem a week. This is what I did last year:
Mon- teacher read, echo read, choral read (or sing!)
Tues- circle capitals at the beginning of the sentence green (go) and end punctuation red (stop), comma are pause so we use yellow (like a yield sign)
Wed- underline sight or red words with red and words we can sound out another color. They love sounding out sight words that don't follow the rules, they sound funny!
Thurs- competition... Boys vs girls, table vs. table, & etc. Sometimes we do a judges panel if another adult stops by, like American idol, and the winning group gets a gum ball... It's usually a tie of course!
Fri- art project to go with the poem
Monthly- this year I am going to periodically send home the poem for a race to read, where the child reads it to as many adults as they can over the weekend. The adult signs the back each time... The student with the most signatures can keep a trophy on their desk! I'm going to tell them that it even counts if they call grandparents or aunts and uncles to read it, but have mom or dad put their name.
What other suggestions do you have? The students would do all the underlining/circling, I would draw sticks to call them to my doc cam. They really liked it and were well behaved.

poetry notebook

I have used a poetry notebook and loved it! One new poem each week, introduced on Monday. I do similar activities as listed in the previous post, but not something every day and not the same thing each time. Throughout the year, I also provided each poem as a "puzzle". I typed the poems large, had them laminated and chopped up for kids to put back together. Kids could do Poetry Puzzles as a "finished" activity. Later in the year, I incorporated a written response to the poem. For example, if the poem was about weather, students responded by writing about their favorite weather and what they like about that weather. They glue each poem each week in their poetry notebook. They can work in their poetry notebook throughout the week by illustrating the poem or re-reading their poems to practice their fluency. Sometimes if we have an extra 10 minutes, I have students buddy read their poetry notebooks with each other. If they work really hard and ask really nicely , I let them perform it for the class every once in a while! How fun! Last year, around March one of my really struggling readers was practicing her poetry notebook and came up to me SO excited because she "couldn't read it alone at the beginning of the year and listen to me read it now - I know all of these words" and then beautifully recited the poem to me! What a prize!

This year I made a laminated cover that I printed on cute school paper. I also laminated a plain colored sheet for the back cover. Then I bound just the poems, without the art templates & instructions with our binding machine. I figure that even if we don't read them all, the students will like to have them. I plan to do the art project on the page opposite the poem, so it will be on the back side of another. The students will only be allowed to use glue sticks, as liquid glue will make a wrinkly mess of the sheet we're gluing on.

I'm really excited to use it. I did a sensory ABC book of poems that I created for kindergarten and it worked great. Those were all on tagboard though because I knew just how many sheets there were.

I think a three ring binder would work great too, but would cost more. However, it would take less time to make if you just had your students add the poem you are working on each week. Could you request binders on your supply list?

This is my first year teaching first grade after spending the last 14 years in 3rd. Before that I spent some years in K, but that seems like forever ago. I really love the link. I think I'm going to go with the binder idea. I know I can get some from my school and I did see some in the Dollar Tree. Maybe I can even get my sister's company to donate a few. Thanks again for sharing. I'm sooooo excited to have something to cover Poetry!
