Growing Readers by Kathy Collins?

Okay, another question about professional books. I just purchased and read "No More Im Done!" for writing. And I loved Mrs. Anderson's typed up version of Lucy Calkins UoS. Im hoping to use ideas from both of these this year in my Writer's Workshop.

Now, for Reader's Workshop...my school adopted the Good Habits, Great Readers program a few years, and I found it be very dull and lacked substance. So to add some "umph!" to my reader's workshop, does anyone recommend "Growing Readers" by Kathy Collins? I've read good reviews on it, just not sure if it's worth buying or not.. I've already spent too much money on professional books and school stuff this summer! Arrgh..

Are there any Units of Study already typed up for this, similar to the one by Lucy Calkins (that Mrs.Anderson did)??

Yes, I followed it this year and absolutely LOVED IT! Easy to use and I started implementing with my class without reading through the entire book (until I had time) so it's easy to follow and implement. For example, she has flowers hence the title of the book that act as bullets to what mini lesson you would do each day. So the first mini lesson is who am I as a reader? and a little blurb about what you should introduce to your class. I followed this all the way through the school year with no problems and I adapted a few things here and there to my taste and my class. I didn't do EVERYTHING in the book I picked and chose accordingly. It is similar to Lucy Cal..Writer's Workshop so it will work nicely together. I highly recommend it to enhance your Reader's Workshop. I did my mini lesson and then had the children try it or do what I was looking for and then gave them 15 minutes to do on their own or partner read. By the end of the year, they were reading on their own/partner reading 20-25 minutes. I think if you type in growing readers on the websearch at PT or online you'll find a shortened version of the book. I remember seeing it somewhere, but don't rememeber where. Good Luck!
