Two poetry ideas

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am retired but when I see a good idea, I want to pass it on. Since it is Poetry Month, I thought I would post these two things I saw recently, one on Pinterest and one on FB from our local library. Could possibly be good options for a menu of project choices. Here is #1, called a black out poem, using a page of an old book. I suppose a magazine or even a newspaper page could work too with no book harm

This is called a Book Spine poem. I can see kids snapping photos at home to make postcard size projects. Maybe a nice bulletin board idea!

I just looked on Google Images for book spine poem and there are dozens!

WOW, WOW, WOW

Love both of these ideas! I am going to have my sixth graders work in teams to make book spine poetry, even though poetry month is almost over.

You are SO sweet to post these as a retired teacher - perhaps you should think about being a consultant now that you are retired. What wonderful ideas and I am grateful for your sharing.

AWESOME ideas and I love teaching poetry. I teach 6th grade and they will love this.
I always do the headline poems where you choose a consonant and then cut out a bunch of words that start with that letter. They also cut out connecting words like a, and, then, is, for and punctuation.
Once they have their baggie of words, the next day each student lays out what they did and start playing with the words until they create an alliteration poem. They glue the words on construction paper and they look great. I hang them in the hallway and I catch kids reading them all the time.
They also love concrete poetry, limericks, haiku, couplets, free verse. We use ipads and pic collage to create these poems and then share them using a document camera. Total engagement.
