Low Low Class

I have a good class but man, are they low!!!

With Dibels, they should be reading 52wpm.

I have 12 students reading 25wpm or less. I have 4 reading below 10wpm.

I feel like I have no idea where to even begin. They will be pulled out for reading intervention but I feel like I have kindergarten students in my room with no reading concepts at all.

Just "meet them where they are" and concentrate on how much potential for growth they have this year!

(And keep reminding yourself - in the real world, accuracy is more important than speed...accuracy is more important than speed...accuracy is more important than speed.)

I am so jealous of schools where teachers say "they get pulled out for interventions." We have to do our own interventions. While we teach the other students, too.

Same here Kaluahblast. and last year I had 1 student who was new to the U.S. from the middle east and had never been taught to read in any language, 1 boy who I pushed for further assessment and it turned out his auditory processing was in the 1% and he had qualified for SLD in math and reading. Her go testing in Feb-I was his only support until April. Then I had a boy with an IQ of 71-couldnt read at all either. Then another who was just a serious truant who also couldnt even read dolch list 3.

My kids were 8-9 and in third!

I feel you pain about the low low class OP. Been there and survived to tell the the but whew! it was exhausting.

I also have a low, low class. Our second grade as a whole is VERY low. Something must have been in the water that year. I feel you pain!

My class is low this year too, but they seem very hands-on. I decided I'll have to access their attention with as much motion and activity as possible.
Reading will involve kinesthetics in every creative way I can imagine.

Maybe the Kindergarten teachers have some materials you can borrow. It's interesting how many of us see the same thing this year.

I had to go to 1st grade and get some left over math books to teach from. They didn't remember anything from using the same book last year. Somebody was for sure messing with something they should not have been the year that these babies were born.

Our problem is that the powers that be insist that if we teach our very low students at second grade level that they will somehow magically "get it". So, we are all trying to find time outside of the scheduled "use the program faithfully" hours to help our struggling students. Most of them are well below grade level.
