I need you to tell me to put my big girl panties on

My new building is having a staff picnic tomorrow. I canít tell you the number of ways I donít want to go. Since Iím new I feel like I need to go.

I need my PT friends to:
1) tell me to put my big girl pants on and at least make an appearance and
2) give me an idea for a quick an easy dish to pass.

I just need to (wo)man up and do it and accept itís part of being an adult and being new to a building.

Yep, ya gotta go. As for food, go to,the deli and get Aram sandwiches. They might be called pinwheel sandwiches. Soft lavosh (which is like a tortilla) filled with turkey, cheese, lettuce, rolled up and sliced.

Yes I would go. I would take a brick of cream cheese, drain salsa and then pour it over the cream cheese. Serve with crackers.

1. Yep, you gotta go. Talk to 4 or 5 people, the ones who will notice and then you can leave after about half an hour with a vague excuse.

2. Go to your local supermarket and pick up the vegetable tray that usually has carrots, snow peas, tomatoes and some kind of dip.

This is your opportunity to make an impression. If I recall, your school didn't start very long ago. People don't really know you outside of what you are contracted to do for them. And if you haven't been started yet at all, now is the time to make a fantastic first impression.

I wouldn't go "quick and easy" and "make an appearance." I would wow them with something, even if I had to buy it, and I'd spend a significant percentage of time at the event getting to know as many people as possible and letting them get to know you.

It's a time to show positivity and enthusiasm for your position during social activities, which translates to partnerships and teamwork during professional activities.

Yes. You should go and make connections. Take something delicious and decadent with chocolate. You'll be a hit!

I'm sorry, but you have to go. I would hate it, too. But you can do it!! It will be over with by the end of tomorrow! Focus on that.

I actually would not bring an "easy" dish to pass. Bring something really yummy (still could be easy, I guess). It will be an easy conversation topic then and people will talk to you to get the recipe.

I was thinking about bringing my motherís amazing Gooey Butter Cake. Easy, but yummy and no one else will have it.

Yes, go and make an appearance. You donít have to stay long. Talk to a few people and be open.
I agree with pp. Stop at the store and pick up something easy such as a small veggie tray.

I was going to suggest bringing a dessert like a pan of brownies. But your momís cake sounds delicious. Bring it. First impressions are lasting impressions.

If you brought Gooey Butter Cake to my school, I'd be your friend for life.

It won't be as bad as you anticipate, and it might even turn out to be fun. I usually find the anticipation is worse than the actual event.

For things like these, I always tell myself I have to stay for an hour. Then I can leave. More often than not, an hour passes really quickly and I end up staying longer. You might like it and might be surprised at how friendly people are and how glad they are that you came.

Yep-you need to go. This is a new school and new people. Give them a chance to get to know you and be open to meeting them. (Says the person who has been a wallflower her entire life.) Bring the cake. It sounds yummy!

FWIW, I think you are brave and a strong woman. You've got this!

The cake sounds yummy! Good choice! I like the idea of telling yourself you only have to stay an hour. That would help mentally, and really I think that even if you do end up leaving after an hour, you still made an appearance and an effort. You've got this!

This recipe is super easy to make. I first made it about ten years ago for a school function. I have been asked to bring it to every function since then.
Italian Cheese Dip
1 1/2 cups mayonnaise
1 1/2 cups sour cream
1 cup 7 cheese Italian blend (shredded)
2 Tbsp grated parmesan cheese
1 Tbsp minced onion
1 tsp white sugar
1 dash of garlic sauce

Mix together and chill for at least an hour. Serve with wheat thins, tostitos or celery.

Yes, go and bring your fantastic dessert in a disposable container so if you want to leave early you won't have to wait until after dessert is done.
