I am getting ready to begin math groups. Do you group children ahead of each lesson or ahead of each topic? Also, what data do you use to group children? Our school is starting EnVisions this year.

I group by unit or chapter. Students also need to learn to work through things with different personalities.

I use summative assessments and rank them high to low. Then I split in the middle and slide up the bottom half. So top kid is with top middle, second with second middle, etc. That way, I don't get the students for whom it's easy with a student who struggles.
