It's that time of year. Time to teach my fourth graders how to round--always a challenge. Any suggestions for favorite songs, videos, poems or tricks to help support their understanding? Thanks for your insight.

This is my all time favorite rhyme for rounding off. When it comes to the words "change, change, ..." I really exaggerate the words while making bunches of zeros on top of the following digits. It's silly, of course, but it helped my 3rd graders remember.

I ran off copies so they could glue the rhyme in their agendas.

Rounding HIll

I've found that the most effective tool is the rounding hill. If the digit in the place to the right is on the left side of the hill (0-4), the digit in the place you are rounding stays the same. If the digit is 5+, you go up one. The one I use is similar to the picture, but I put the 5 slightly to the right. I've found that this visual works for almost all kids. In addition, it translates well to the number line.
