I just got deferred from blood donation

Its only a 24 hr deferment, but Im bummed. I always hover close to the too low to donate measurement of my iron. As of today Ive been deferred twice in my life due to low iron. Once here and once in Missouri.

Guess Ill take an iron supplement and try again tomorrow or next week. Doing this is so important to me. Ive lost too many loved ones to cancer and Ive seen just how important donation was to their treatment plan.

I used to donate blood all the time in college and it was always iffy..low iron.

Finally, they told me not to come back. After the Oklahoma bombing, I thought it had been long enough so I went back. Nope, this time they told me you need all the blood you have. Thanks but no thanks.

I had a false-negative for hepatitis about 30 years ago. We have two donor facilities here. The one I was working with when I got the test still will not accept my blood. The other, Red Cross, will still accept it. They said their tests did not show any issues.

They are pretty fussy about blood donations. Did you know that they can also not let you donate blood if you weigh under 110? That's happened to me a couple of times!

I've often donated blood and was great for a long time. Last time I went, I too was deferred because of low iron. Haven't tried again recently (although I think it's super important)....I wasn't even close to the correct level.

Yes, it's true because it happened to me as well.

Weight limit

I knew that one because my best friend is a tiny 105 pounds sopping wet. We are talking a size 0/2/4 without trying in her late 50s.

She gets deferred all the time despite being a type O something.

Thank you all you wonderful blood donors....it is so important. I'm sorry you were turned away, it's that tricky low iron number. As for low weight.....if I was ever below 110 pounds ....I was in the sixth grade and too young to donate!! .

I wish I could still donate blood. I used to, although there were times I didn't go because my weight was too low. I also had some iron issues.

Now I have health issues that have permanently ended my donor days. Instead, I receive blood products at times. Currently there is a worldwide shortage.

Thanks to those who donate their blood.

It happens to me all the time. I always have them check my iron prior to doing anything else so we don't waste time. I even take iron supplements...aging body. Don't lose sight of that you were there willing...

I used to give every single opportunity, but my iron was low at the last few attempts and I haven't tried again since. I should try again.

My brother has hemophilia, as does my cousin, and both have relied on the kindness of blood donors all their lives. Please know that we, the families, are grateful to those who have donated and those willing but unable.

I hope you are able to donate soon as it clearly means a lot to you.

I have lost two amazing family members to cancer. Both received countless units of blood over months (my grandmother who passed from pancreatic cancer) and years (my aunt who lived 15 years with a kidney cancer that usually takes people in six to nine months).

Oh! I heard myself in so many of the previous comments! I had the same problem.

If you know you are low in iron, prepare by eating foods high in iron a week or so before donating. A Red Cross worker at a blood drive a long time ago gave this advice and also said that iron naturally found in foods is better absorbed than supplements. Also combine them with Vitamin C as C helps iron absorb.
