Play-doh Writing Process Activity
Old 09-04-2010, 08:16 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I did this activity with my 5th graders last week to introduce the writing process. It was amazing! What a powerful way to teach this process. The kids were so involved and got great info through this cool, fun activity. I displayed their final pencil holders on our Curriculum Night, and the parents were impressed.

My niece is student teaching in middle school this year and she and her cooperating teacher did this with their students. I thought it sounded great, so I decided to try it out. The teacher got the idea from online. I'll post the attachment I was sent that shows the script the teacher used. The words that are highlighted are the ones I changed or added to the script.

I used the small Play-doh containers but not the smallest "party-size" containers. The ones I used were between $4 and $5 for 15 of them.

These are sooo cute! I am going to try it with my third graders.....you don't think it's too high for them, do you?

I have one question...will the play doh dry out and retain it's shape so they can keep them? Or do you think it will just crumble?

I would like to do this with my 4th graders. I think if I reworded some things it would be fine. I love what your kids came up with! How long does this take? What do the kids do after they display them? Do they really use them for pencil holders...the playdough would harden and maybe they could really use them?

I'm going to use this with my 7/8s! They like to pretend they're old, but they love to play with play-doh too!

answering your questions

It took approx. 30-40 min. I really didn't pay that much attention to the time because I blocked out a large chunk of our afternoon, just in case. It was time very well spent!

We only displayed them for that evening's Curriculum Night when the parents would be there to see them. The kids took them home the next day. I did not have the kids leave them on their desks because that would have ended up being a distraction.

The Play-doh does dry out, so these couldn't really be long term without looking kind of yucky after a period of time. If you wanted to make them last, you could always use Model Magic material, but that would get very expensive.

I definitely think this activity could be adjusted to use with any grade. Just rewrite the script using grade-friendly wording.

My niece said there's also a rubric that can be given to all the students to score each others' pencil holders, but I didn't do that. I wanted to focus more on the reason behind the activity, not so much the product. I think that may be found in the link, if you're interested.

I LOVE this idea. I teach 5th grade inclusion, and I really think this will help with those students as well as my reluctant writers. I can't wait to do this when we return from Fall Break.

BIG THANKS!

I love how hands-on and how concrete this makes the writing process! My initial thought is to display these as part of the class decor and give to kids when they are struggling with writing as a reminder that writing is just being creative. I'm going to change it a bit to a two day project to model prompt versus creative writing.

Does anyone have a 5th grade friendly script to use with the play doh activity that reinforces the Writing Process?
