Sixth grade appropriate books

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am a new teacher and want to start to build a library of books for my classroom. The school is literally being built this year and the library will be pretty empty for now. I have searched for age appropriate books and found some. but I want to have a huge list, all genres ready for the kids. Any suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

Be sure to check out his suggestions for boys who are reluctant readers:

Most popular in my class library:

Anything by Margaret Peterson Haddix but especially the Missing Children series and Among the Hidden series.

Love that Dog & Hate That Cat

Shel Silverstein poems

Jack Prelutzky poems

Emma Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree

Bud Not Buddy

The False Prince

Rick Riordan books but especially Lightning Thief series

Eragon books

Dear America books

Tale of Despereaux (but only after I read it alod - they think it sounds stupid at first or know the movie was bad, but then they get really into it and some reread it)

Narnia series

The Giver collection

A Wrinkle in Time and sequels

(Fantasy seems to be popular the last few years)

I have found that any of the Rick Riordan books are good. I teach Language Arts and Social Studie and used the Lightning Thief while we were studying Ancient Greece - the entire class loved it and the boys especially

My boys love any of the Mike Lupica books. Gordon Korman is popular with my sixth graders, too.

At the end of the school year, I asked my three reading classes what their favorite books were that they have read while being a sixth grader. This list comes directly from them. :-)
