What do you like and dislike about your classroom?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I visited my new classroom today to get measurements for some diy projects to keep me busy at home. At the end of last school year, I was told I would be moved into a class right across the hall from my old one. At the time, it was the guidance counselor's and speech therapist's office and a few years before that it was the computer lab.

When I got home today, I got the thinking about the things I liked and disliked about my new room.

Likes:
Lots of plug outlets (I stopped counting after 25)
Backdoor actually has a keyhole (no more sticking something in the door during recess)
Bathroom fan doesn't sound like a turbo jet taking off
Spacious closet (I can fit a small teacher desk in there if I wanted to)
Direct access to playground
Plugs in closet (hello, fan, fridge, microwave)
Windows face the sidewalk so I can literally see everyone coming to the primary building (no more surprise tactical walk-ins from admins or district!!!)

Dislikes:
Smaller classroom
Out of 24 cubbies, 12 are kindergartener-reachable (my old room I had 18 reachable ones)
Less shelving in class and closet
Have to buy/build student storage

So, I am curious. What do you like and dislike about your classroom?

too small-not enough storage
too many built in cabinets so it is hard to have centers
way far away from the bathrooms, front doors and the gym
only two very small windows

Likes:
Large size
Huge cabinets/Lots of storage
Lots of windows/sunlight
Carpeting
Sink
Not too close to the main office
Close to recess door

Dislikes:
Windows face the playground which makes it noisy when other grades are at recess
Partly underground so it's at risk of flooding
Located below the stage area in the library, and sometimes kids run up there or furniture is being moved, which can be distracting

I moved from a shoe box sized classroom with very little light and it was a trailer.

Now I have 4 large windows, built-in wood counters and cubbies, and lots of space for my preschoolers.

Dislikes
none really-feeling very spoiled.

-It is definitely the biggest classroom I'm ever had. It's huge and definitely the biggest classroom in the school by a LONG SHOT. It's HUGE!

-Way far away from everyone (good and bad)

Dislikes:

-Way from away from everyone
-No Sink
-Technology doesn't work
-Awkward shape and set up make it hard to set up in an efficient manner
-Not much room for hanging things and things don't stick to the wall well.
-No storage whatsoever, not even a closet. They had to bring in some metal cabinet things for some storage and other things have to be stored in a storage room down the hall. I also bought big plastic tubs to store things in like Kleenex, paper towels, etc.
-No windows!!!!!!!

-Nice size
-Plenty of natural light
-Carpet=no scraping chair noises
-Connecting doors to grade level buddies

Dislikes
-Far from the bathroom
-All the way at the back of campus
-Next door to autism self contained and emotional disturbance self contained so we hear a lot of screaming most days and when very distructive kids are taken out of class to melt down the tend to break my or my students things. Broke my lunch cart today and student thermos
-3 walls of windows=very little space to hang things up, forget about anchor charts and posters for the most part which is hard with G.L.A.D ELL units
-No smart board
-No counters
-projector mount exists but the district wont mount our projector
-The only place to plug in and place our teacher computer, doc cam projector is a floor plug dead center of the classroom

Likes:

Light and airy - windows on two sides. I almost never turn the lights on.
Freshly painted.
Close to office/staffroom/toilet
Covered walk to office etc - nice when itís really hot or wet.

Dislikes:

Hard to heat in winter (lots of windows and high ceilings)
Lack of storage
Bank of computers in the centre of the room - putting those power points in the floor was a bad idea
If we ever have a serious lockdown I will go down first (lots of windows and close to the office).

I am in a school now that is only a couple years old, so I am so blessed! It is my dream classroom!

Pros:
large, lots of storage, freshly painted, nothing ugly to cover up like my previous classrooms, a little "nook" in the back for my library, a sink and drinking fountain, bathroom is right outside the door in the hall, fabulous location near the front of the school, air conditioning, large windows with blinds built into them (between the glass), love the view from my window (a little grassy courtyard area)

Cons: I would love a door that goes directly outside instead of just to the hallway, I would love it to be even bigger

I forgot a positive! My light switch is a dimmer that has settings on it so I can turn on all the lights, just the front or back ones, etc. It is awesome!

I am in a different school this year. My new room is a bit on the small side, and my storage space is limited. BUT, it is a new place and that makes me incredibly happy!

I teach K. This will be my 27th year in my same classroom. (I had this same room when I taught first grade before we switched from being Preschool-Grade 5 to Preschool-Grade 1 School.)

I like:
  • that there is a bathroom/sink in my classroom-very helpful when teaching K.
  • that there is a separate sink in my classroom, which is helpful for clean ups and washing hands before lunch.
  • that there is a big closet for storage that connects me with a colleague's room.
  • the color of the walls.
  • that they finally replaced the old sink, which leaked for years, and the cabinet underneath, that was falling apart.
  • the technology-Smartboard/computer/Hovercam and iPads.
  • that there isn't wall-to-wall carpeting-just a large carpet for students to sit on in front of the Smartboard. So it is easier to clean up paint spills, and bodily fluids.
  • there are two big ceiling fans.

I don't like:
  • that there is no air conditioning in the classrooms-especially when the room temperature gets above 82 degrees, but the principal, secretary and nurse's offices have A/C.
  • that the room is so small. It used to be a first grade classroom. The true K classrooms are large and open.
  • that the shelves/hooks in the coat closet are too close together to fit today's backpacks, and too high for many of my K students to reach to hang up backpacks and put lunchboxes on the shelves.
  • that we have a door in our classroom directly to the outside, but it is alarmed and we are not allowed to use it except for fire drills.
  • that toilet in the bathroom is about 5 inches off the floor with a weird scalloped seat that makes it harder for boys to aim (I'm afraid to use it. If I got down to sit on it, I probably wouldn't be able to get back up.)
  • that the sink they replaced is too tiny so I can't wash some things in it.
  • that they removed our printers and won't let us bring in a printer from home.
  • that we can't have a mini-fridge in our classrooms.

  • Size (My room is pretty large)
  • I have a restroom, sink, and storage closest.
  • Plenty of built in shelves and cabinets
  • Lots of technology (smart board, 4 student computers, laptops for teachers)
  • There are two large windows for natural light.
  • The class is across the hall form the copyroom and restroom.

Dislikes
  • There is not enough wall space, the built in shelves take up 2 walls.
  • My smart board was put in the middle of my white board.
  • There are not enough outlets this is why my smart border is where it is.
  • All of the cubbies are in one conner.
  • The classroom is off the playground. I have to close my blinds in the afternoon.

Likes:
- carpet so it's quiet
- beautiful old wood beamed ceiling
- sink/water fountain in the room
- 4 large windows above the air/heat unit
- it's pretty- purple and silver grey, along with the back wall of old wood from floor to
ceiling
- 2 separate light switches so I can have 1/2 the room on & 1/2 the room off if I want
- the phonic ear system
- projector and white board, and document camera
- 1:1 Chromebook cart (25 Chromebooks)
Dislikes -
- not enough outlets
- could use more wall space ( my bulletin boards are huge)
- it could be a little larger
- my 2 closets look great until you realize that the kids have to put their stuff in there
too! So ...more storage
- 1/2 the windows aren't accessible because there is a giant ac/heat unit underneath
them.
