Sonic Drive-Thru the Slowest of ALL Fast Food Drive-Thrus?

Sonic has THE SLOWEST drive-thru out of ALL the many other fast food drive-thrus in my area. It's not just a bit slower than 1/2 or most others. It's considerably slower than ALL.

Is it like that nationwide? The curiosity is killing me. Do they use older/slower registers or something? I don't go there much myself, but I'd probably go a little more often if the wait time was better.

I've never been to Sonic, but the scathing Yelp reviews for both locations near me made local news. A customer wanted to leave the drive thru after waiting for too long, but she was boxed in by other people in line who wouldn't move. The police were called, and that's how it all got on the news.

We don't go often, but there is one in our home town that is the worst! We've had so many bad experiences there. I was curious after our last time there and they have terrible Yelp reviews.

I lived in Texas previously before I moved to Montana and my experience was it was better to park and have them bring it to me rather than go through the drive-through because the drive-through was so slow. Here in Montana, there is only 1 in this city and people are always complaining about how slow the service is, apparently due to not enough workers.

85% of the time my local Sonic moves quickly. It does have its slow moments though. I hate when they ask the car at the drive up window to pull up and wait for their item and they donít pull up far enough for the next car at the window to pay/move on.
Our Zaxbyís is way slower. They usually have a line of cars backed up into the road. Iíve pretty much given up on them.

The McDonalds drive thru that I pass on my way to work is the absolute slowest place on the planet. And 85% of the time your order will be wrong. Unfortunately it is the only fast food in town. There is also a subway I guess but you have to go in and get grilled about your job, life, family before they will wait on you. Life in a small town.

We usually just go at happy hour for slushes and I’ve learned 80-90% of the time it’s faster to just pull in to a spot. When I used the drive thru I noticed most of the time no one started my drink order until we were at the window. It looked like a staffing/expediting issue to me...

ETA: I’ve told my husband that Chick-fil-A should just market a class/workshop to teach other restaurants how to do things.

Mine is fast. Most people seem to want to park and eat in their car. Rarely a line in the drive thru.

Slow 'fast' food

I've been noticing a trend of very slow fast food, and particulary the drive-thrus lately. At first I thought it was just my local Wendy's. Then I wondered if the McD's across the street was competing with them to be slower. So I tried going into the McD's - big mistake, they were much worse on the inside with no other customers in line! It's not worth the frustration, so WaWa is getting a lot more of my money now (so sorry for those of you without WaWa!).

Our Sonic is really fast.

I live in a small town, and the manager at our Sonic is very good. He has high expectations for his employees, and pays them well in my opinion. The Sonic in the next small town east of us is the slowest ever.
DH works at Chick fil a. (Not in our town) They have a policy that they are supposed to get people through the drive-thru in something like 3 minutes or less. I don't remember exactly what it is, but it's fast. During their rush, they have people stand out in the drive-thru with computers to take orders as people pull up so they don't have to wait to get their order in. That way, they can pick up their food as soon as they get up to the window.

This is a heck of a question for me because I swear on everything holy that my town had the slowest drive through across the board.

Taco bell, not bad unless its between 6:00 and 10:30 pm, If you go then it is usually like 2030 minutes.

In and out burger-It is busy all hours of the day and night with a drive through that I have seen back up 20+ cars. perhaps thats the real issue-the volume of customers, rather than the speed of the service. I have personally waited in it for 40 minutes.

Sonic-easy 20 minutes in the drive through while if you park its only about 10-15.

There is a Sonic app

You can order ahead, select a time to pick up, then pull into a stall and click on "I'm here". They usually bring the food out immediately. Your payment info is on the app. We use a reloadable Sonic card. So you don't have to wait for your payment to process. Drinks are always half price on the app.

The Sonics near me are all the same as most any other fast food place in town. Our Dairy Queen wins the award for slowest line!!

I love Sonic, but I don't think our Sonic has a drive-thru window. Parking and ordering is a little slower than the drive-thru at McDonalds or BK; but Sonic always gets our order right, and the other fast food restaurants in our town almost always get it wrong. The slowest drive-thrus in our town are definitely KFC and Dairy Queen.

I see! I personally don't care for Sonic that much, but every once in a while, I'll go. There's only 1 location in my area and that one was late coming into this area compared to the states where they normally have it, I believe.

In my area, no one really uses the eat-in-the-car feature. I'd never use it either. I think just once for their grand opening, they actually had the employees on roller skates taking the food to cars...if even then. The drive-thru line is usually pretty long every time I pass by them. I'm sure the long wait really deters people from even going in the 1st place anymore in my city.

I still don't see why they're considerably slower. All the other fast foods in my area are so much faster. The FASTEST in my area is the McDonald's drive-thru at BREAKFAST time. They have everyone whipped outta there.

I haven't been to Sonic since college. We always did the eat in the car feature, and I remember them being pretty slow, but we were never in a hurry as we went mostly to hang out anyway. They built one near me a few years ago, but I just never think to go. Around here, the slowest are Freddy's and Culver's. Culver's at least has signs before you get in line saying that they "make each order fresh" and that it's going to take longer. I don't go to either unless I'm not in a rush.

Our drive through is pretty fast. It is local taboo to order food in the drive through...drinks only. If there is a stall at the window they will deliver drinks to the next several cars so you can get out of line quicker. I don't eat there very often because the food is very greasy.

Ditto on Chick-fil-a offering a class. They are the BEST. It doesnít matter if their line is backed up all the way to the traffic light. I will still be in and out with enough time to get back to school. Sonic? McDonaldís? Not a chance. They can have 1-2 cars in the line, and Iíll still get through the Chick-fil-a line faster, and as an added bonus theyíll be polite, courteous, and get my order right.

I donít think Iíve ever gone through the drive through part of a Sonic. Honestly, Iím not sure that most of ours even have a drive through. I always just park and order.

The Sonic by me is lightening speed compare to the Dante's Inferno drive thru at my local Taco.

Your Sonic must churns through employees, the training is terrible and the management is trash. (the issue with the above Taco Bell)

We have several slow drive thrus but the worst is Steak N Shake in our neighboring town. I'm pretty sure you could celebrate your next birthday there while waiting for your order.

I wouldn't be surprised if this 1 & only Sonic closes up because gradually fewer people won't want to put up w/ the long wait & there are TONS of other fast food places all around here.
