I hate when cashiers comment on my purchases.

This is one reason that I LOVE self-checkout and use it whenever possible. Nosy, or even well-meaning but inappropriate, comments from cashiers about the items I'm purchasing is in my top ten of PET PEEVES.

Especially at a drugstore, I feel that the cashiers should keep their mouths shut and ring up purchases. People are often purchasing private and/or sensitive/intimate items at drugstores, and they don't need some nosy comments from the cashier!

Today, my DD got Nexplanon, a birth control implant in her upper arm. We went to Walgreens afterwards to get a waterproof cover for use in the shower, and some additional gauze/tape for the incision. The cashier looked at the items, looked at DD, and said loudly, "WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOUR ARM!??!!" We live in a small town. The 3 customers behind us were: a boy DD used to go to high school with, a retired teacher, and the grandfather of one of her friends. And while she's not ashamed of using birth control, she certainly doesn't feel the need to share it with any of these people.

Without even hesitating, she replied, "Shark bite."

The cashier's head snapped back to me, and I shook my head, saying, "Damn sharks."

And we left.

Me, too.
Once in awhile I indulge myself and buy a gossip magazine and it's so irritating when the cashier holds it up to loudly read the headlines and/or smirks or makes a sarcastic comment.
Most cashiers don't, but the few that do are annoying.

I don't think anyone should comment on another person's purchases. Once when I was still teaching, I met a parent of one of my current students in a grocery store. We briefly said hello. I had a box of alcohol preps in the front basket of my cart, and the parent asked me if I was a diabetic because I was buying alcohol preps. I said I wasn't, but I felt like telling her that it wasn't any of her business.

That's just weird that she would make this assumption. I'd never comment on anything a person was buying at a store. And yes, I don't like it when cashiers say anything about what I'm buying, either.

From now on, "shark bite" is going to be my go-to response when people ask me why I'm wearing a bandage. It's even funnier, since I don't live anywhere near the ocean!

I always use self-checkout so I don't have to deal with the comments and so I can bag my own items. But I think at Trader Joe's they must force the cashiers to talk to you. I have never gotten out of there without having a discussion about some purchase I am making. I know it's meant to be friendly, but actually it kind of stresses me out.

I think it's rude when they comment on my purchases.

One morning after purchasing something at CVS, the cashier read ALL the coupons on my 8 foot receipt. I couldn't believe it. I don't think she works there any more.

What a perfect answer!

My friend was buying kale for her son at the store. The store clerk used to work at McDonald's. The clerk commented on the kale. My friend said, "Oh, the kale is for my son." Store clerk says, "Mr. Ten-piece Chicken Nuggets is eating kale now?"

I LOVE your sassy daughter. Personally, I would write a short note to store manager indicating a need for retraining employees on privacy.

The only comments I have gotten have been at supermarket when I have bought an overflowing cart load of stuff. I usually respond with ďgrowing boys at home.Ē Or no response at all.

That is really clever of your daughter! Love the sass.

Does/Would it bother you at Trader Joe's when they always tell you what a good choice a specific item was? That doesn't bother me, but anywhere else it would.

One time I needed to buy an ovulation kit at Walgreens for medical reasons (not pregnancy). The cashier started giving me tips (with customers in line) on getting pregnant.

I had a cashew once tell me that the top that I was buying was not very pretty at all, and that she didn't like that color!

I love DD's response. When I had my youngest, the two nurses in the delivery room asked what we were going to name him and then tried to talk me out of his name. They thought it too old fashioned.

I too love your DD's response! And I also hate it when cashiers comment on my purchases. I remember one time when I bought a card for a teammate and the cashier opened it up, read it, and went on about how cute/funny it was. Luckily it wasn't anything super personal, but what if it was? Just ring up my stuff!

I love your dd's response, too! Very quick witted of her.

Personally, I don't know why so many are so bothered by so many things. Life is just too short. It makes me wonder why anyone bothers to say anything to anyone. I don't see that the comment is bad, truthfully. Your dd had a bandage on, was buying more, and the comment could be just a way of commensurating rather than an opportunity to embarrass or butt into someone's personal issues. I choose to take it as commensuration. Still, your dd's response was perfect for a situation where you don't want to go into specifics or details on the problem.

Great response!

I don't mind small talk with cashiers (usually), but I also dislike commenting on my purchases. There have been some inappropriate comments made by cashiers as to what's in my basket in the past.

Great come back on your DDís part. Well, at least you get comments of some kind. It seems the cashiers I deal with donít talk to you at all. They act like they donít want to be there. Just once Iím going to say ďsmile, at least you have a job, not everyone is that lucky.Ē

Good, quick thinking of your daughter!

In my entire life, no employee has nosily or negatively commented on anything I've bought in my life. Maybe once, someone's said something positive, like, "that's a pretty nail color" (when I'm buying nail polish).

I agree. Good thinking on your daughter’s part.

I hate comments from cashiers as well. Once I was buying stuff for a concert and the cashier said “Looks like someone has the munchies.” Another time when I had a lot of stuff the guy asked if I was having a party. I just glared at him and didn’t answer.

Sometimes one will say, “Oh, that stuff is really good is isn’t it?”

Clever comebacks!

I hate this too, even when it's not intruding on something personal. There's a grocery store in town where, about every third time I'm in there, a cashier or bagger asks me what I'm going to do with something I purchased. This is usually when I've bought a less-usual type of produce, like fennel bulb, chard, wheat grass, etc. It's not an invasive question but I never feel like discussing recipes in the check-out lane. Plus, I then have to double check my receipt because I always wonder if I'm being distracted so I can be overcharged. One time, as I was being questioned about what I was going to do with a head of bok choy I noticed that I was being charged for baby bok choy. If I hadn't noticed it, I would have paid $12.00 for a head of bok choy.
