Miss the kids!

I quit subbing last May and thought I was done and dusted!! I'm 73, retired teacher, sub and volunteer but took a break. We've been travelling but recently I've realized I miss it. I miss the kids and the social aspect of being among other educators. I was with Kelly Educational Staffing in Tampa and actually called them yesterday to see what they needed for me to be re-hired. I'll probably have to do fingerprints again at the cost of $80 but oh well. I'm thinking that one day a week won't kill me!
I would also be selective and go to schools I know especially the one I retired, subbed often and volunteered at recently.
I still feel I have something to offer the kids. I love Kindergarten and reading my favorite books to them, also singing and play centers. Thanks for listening. I'm praying and listening for guidance!

Good for you, and I say go for it! Iím retired and subbing as well, and my intention is to wear out, not rust out. Do what makes you happy.

Just today I accepted a very difficult assignment because I "miss the kids." It actually worked out well considering it was Friday, raining, and a class with a reputation for being difficult. I both sub and volunteer... and would just note that volunteering is a viable option that often makes it even more possible to offer something because you're not totally locked into a lesson plan, plus the kids figure out that the relationship is different. In some ways, it creates the best of both worlds.

We are close to the same age. My DW says I'm a kid magnet and she also can tell when I need a kid fix. So I'd say, Don't cheat yourself or the kids out of the opportunity to contribute.

I keep telling people that next year...

...will be my last. I'll turn 65 at the end of the year. But then, I really DO enjoy the kids and the staff at the middle and high schools where I teach. The middle school has tons of new staff, but plenty of my old coworkers too. I'm highly requested, so that's a sure ego boost. But I can afford to be picky. And subbing pays for extras and for travel. So we will see. I say go for it.

Reading your post makes my heart happy! It is so refreshing to hear from others who love what they do. I am kind of in the same boat...retired after 30 1/2 years in the classroom, but can't quite give it up. I love to spend a day in school. I don't try to work all the time, and I choose assignments carefully. It still brings me joy. I hope you go ahead and sign up again. Wishing you more happy days in kindergarten.

Thank you ElemEd - I signed up today! Have to go through fingerprints and paperwork again but may be in the classroom before school ends!

I knew I wasn't done when I was in Vancouver at a Walmart and saw a huge display of Robert Munsch books! My favorite author for kindergarten! I bought them all!

I got rehired as a sub and actually worked on Friday for a half- day in 1st Grade.

All went well and I loved it! I got to read my favorite Robert Munsch books and also to act enthusiastic and be very positive. A specialist teacher came by to take one of the students - she didn't want to go! I took that as a compliment.

I'm booked for next Friday in a 1st Grade. This is the new me - 73 and still teaching!
