Clip to ScrapBook #1

Last week in 4th grade a very loud and disruptive boy kept SHUSHING all the other students. Finally, I said "John stop SHUSHING everyone, that's what they paid me to do". He replied "You get paid?".

Do students really think substitute teachers or regular teachers for that matter don't get paid? Makes you wonder.

while we were in class...

I usually refer to it as coming to school or at school but had said "on my way to work, ...." so several asked where I work...

Had the very same question asked of me in a 6th grade classroom. The kids were like "you only come here to get paid?". I said "well I also like to teach and get paid". Another kid spoke up and said "well duh, she doesn't come here for nothing" I could of Kissed that kid.

I used to teach music. Have a Master's degree. One day, a 4th grade teacher asked me if I had a different pay scale (insinuating I shouldn't be paid as much.) Um...I have 2 degrees in specialized instruction AND could hold my own in your classroom as well. I was also responsible to teach and assess 750+ students while only getting them once a week (if I was lucky) while she had 18.

I'm not at all diminishing what a grade level teacher does. It's hard work, and I commend them. I was just really taken aback at the thought that I didn't work for the pay I received.
