Check JC Penneys online - they seem to carry a large selection of dresses.

All of the suggestions would work well and I would add Nordstrom.com to the list. You can save a lot of $$ by looking at Macy’s or Macys.com sales. My DIL gets designer dresses from rent the runway.com. Renting a designer style dress makes so much sense because how often do we go to fancy schmancy events? Not often and then our uber expensive dresses sit in the closet.

Macy’s, Nordstrom, try all the discount stores like TJMaxx, etc.

And online if you have the time.

I would try Boscovs. It may be regional but you could look online.

Modcloth

I really like Modcloth. They have sections for holiday dresses and special occasion dresses on their website. One reason I like the site so much is for most items, the pictures of models wearing the clothes include a traditional (tiny) model and a regular size or plus sized model so you can see the outfit on multiple bodies. They also encourage people to leave reviews including a photo so for some things you can see the dress on many types of bodies that are not models.

Here's a link to the special occasion dresses:

of some of the little know services some of the big department stores have. Nordstroms is by far has the best services of the stores I can afford. They are happy to help you choose dresses to try on and will bring you different sizes while you are in the dressing room. If you find a dress you like but need a different size than that store has they will find a different Nordstroms store and have it sent. You can then go back and try it on and decide if you want it or not.
You can often find some nice dresses on the clearance rack. A few years ago my DGD bought a prom dress from the clearance rack. I asked if they could hold it until her mom came back with us to approve of it (her mom is like that) The saleswoman just said, oh buy it and then if the mom approves you don't need to bother to come back. She said, we take everything back. Everything! *Do ask if they still have that policy.

You found that quickly! I've been to a couple of Marine Corps balls a little over 20 yrs ago! Which one are you going to? The first time was a red dress I already had and the last time was this sleek black dress. I think the red one was from Windsor Fashions and the other was from Ames, which has been closed.

These days if the department stores didn't have anything, I'd also check out David's Bridal, which has formal dresses too.
