Vehicle Registration Tags Question

Okay, I just have this weird fear. What would happen if the tag for my car, the year sticker, falls off? Just a random question that came into my mind because I have to stick my new sticker on this month and it's been very wet and cold that I question how well it will stick. What do you do if it falls off? I have the receipt of purchasing the new tag in my car, the confirmation letter that came with the sticker in the mail, etc. all in my car. Is that enough to show someone if it falls off? Or would I have to pay for another one? Just curious...it's a random thought/worry that's popped into my mind!

Those tags are made to stick

very well. Obviously, you would not put it on a wet plate, but get a napkin or paper towel and dry off/clean the area in question. I don't think you need to worry about the cold, either.

P.S. I think it's your car registration that counts, not the sticker. Because when I renewed my license plate late, I got something to print out and keep in the car until the stickers and registration card arrived. I'm pretty sure that if I had been pulled over, the printout would have sufficed.

If they came off easily they'd probably be stolen a lot. Just make sure the area is clean and dry and it'll be fine.

DH always wipes it clean and dry and then puts it on. Some times they do it at the garage after the car passes inspection. In many many years of plate tags on the same old car or truck through salt, cold, sand, mud, slush, snow we have never lost a sticker.

Mine have never fallen off but:
1) the cops can check to see if you registered in the system
2) I always keep the paperwork to show I registered in my glove compartment

Iím notorious for not registering so when I do itís kind of a big deal and I like to celebrate it.

as others have said, they are really sticky! (and ours are scored so that if someone tried to take yours off, they would have to pry off 4 little triangles!) just wipe any grime or water off before you adhere it. no problem.

Mine stick just fine, but I never understand the directions to remove the old ones first. Theyíre practically welded on. So I just layer. And when you drive a really old car like me (2006), that means youíve layered a LOT.

One of mine fell off once...I didnít have any idea, but the cops stopped me. They could see I was registered and inspected, so just told me to get it replaced. I forget how I did that or whether there was a fee.

I misplaced mine once before I attached it to my plate. Iíd already paid the registration fee. I think it cost me $10 for a new sticker.

It depends on where you live. I had mine taken off my car at school once (stealing them is a thing because the fine is so high for not having them). I didnít have to pay to replace them, but now my DH wonít let me stick mine in and razors them in thin strips.

I guess my state doesnít waste money on glue that sticks well or on education.....or maybe if they spent more on education, someone would grow up to decide to use glue that sticks so well people canít peel them off.

Ours are very sticky, but I have heard of people stealing them. I can't imagine how they do that- I'd think even if you were to manage getting it off, it'd be in shreds- not in tact enough to put on your own car.

Our registration renewal is all done through mail (not sure if i'ts different elsewhere). One year I paid and realized like a month later I never got a sticker. I called and they insisted they mailed and if I didn't have it, I needed to go get a replacement from the DMV. They could see in the computer system that I'd paid so you wouldn't have to pay for a whole registration or anything like that. I believe they only quoted me a couple of dollars for the replacement sticker, but having to go to the DMV is a horrible punishment within itself! Luckily before I managed to go in, the sticker arrived in the mail. The envelope looked worse for wear- I don't know how it eventually got to me but it'd obviously taken a little detour.

Just wipe it off well to dry it first. Winter birthday here in very cold and snowy NH. I have never had a problem with stickers the 3+ decades I have lived here

We layer them because they are so hard to get off. Before we put the new sticker on, we wipe the area down with an alcohol wipe and let it dry. Weíve been doing that on every car my family has owned my entire life and have never had one fall off.

Sure interesting because in Texas, the sticker goes on the inside of your window of the car in the lower corner on driver side. Someone would have to break in and really scrape it off.

I have to send mine in today! Itís due this month.

Thatís yíall registration? I thought that was yíalls inspection sticker. Registration in LA goes on the license plate and inspection in the window. Registration doesnít fall off. Inspection sticker is hanging off in a matter of months.

Thank you, everyone! I know it's a silly fear, but sometimes these thoughts just pop into my head and get me worried or at least thinking "What if..."

Zephie,
Yes. Itís inspection and registration in one. It changed a couple of years ago from 2 stickers on the window to 1.
