easy section re-labeling

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello everyone!

My easy picture book section is in need of some overhaul. The signs (letters of the authors' last names) are so small and each section is only labeled with that first letter (P) for example for all P last names. Little kids can't really find books that way. Can you give me ideas for how to label this section better for little ones!?

Thanks so much!

Most of my littles are more interested in subject that author so I use spine stickers. I have some for basic holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween and Valentines. I also have some to show monsters, cars, animals.

The previous librarian pulled all 0.5-1.9 books and relabeled the spines with the # of the level and then grouped each level on its own on special shelves. It became Easy Readers (ER) and that is the only section for first graders. Hope this helps.

Good advice here, subject stickers help a lot. I have all the traditional ones plus stickers for our state list books and princess books (which really comes in handy!).

If you have enough time/volunteers/supplies I'd definiely make new spine labels for all your books with at least the first 3 letters of the author's last name (cutter) if you can do the whole last name that's even better. The standard here is 3 letters and I wish our books had the whole last name on the label like our public library does, that makes it easier for everyone.

They are so lucky to have you on this project!

For popular collections like Fancy Nancy, Splat the Cat, Bill Martin books (Brown Bear, Brown Bear, etc.), Curious George, Dr. Seuss, Disney, etc.

I label all my Dora the Explorer books like this:

E
DOR

and the Disney (Cars, Wall-E, etc.) like this:

E
DIS

Makes it easier for them to browse AND easier to shelve!! There will be plenty of time for them to learn the Dewey Decimal System when they're a little older.

I also have an ER (Early Reader) section for all the little early readers. They were getting lost in between the big picture books. I have level 1 and level 2 in the Early Reader section. Some of the Level 3 and 4 are more words and higher vocabulary, so those can go in the regular section -- it's your call!

Make it as easy as possible for the kids to find what they want!

Not the labels, the shelves

Thanks girls!

I don't want to relabel the spines, just the shelves. I have decided to do each shelf in the easy section like the spines, so each shelf will have the first book through the last one so: AAB-AFT for example on it with the first letter highlighted. I am toying with doing baskets, but honestly then I would be putting everything in baskets. Maybe just the very popular series picture book authors. That's a good thought!

The job and reorganizing is never done, is it!?
