I feel the same way. It's very frustrating!! I look at all the books in my library as "mine" and I want everyone to treat them as good as I treat them. If it is the child who did the damage, (not siblings, pets, etc.), I let the child know how sad I am that they didn't take care of the book.

I had a parent come in today to pay for a book her child lost. The book was added to the collection on 12/5/12. It was a "princess" book. In a K-2 school these are .very popular. At least she did pay for it. However, I can't place an order for 1 book. Another of the books was overdue. I asked the student. He said he lost it. Then a minute later he said really, I left it too close to the heater and it burned a little.
I, too, feel like these are "my" books. I am trying to teach responsibility, but the loss or destruction of books is almost physically painful.
I got a book back before Christmas that a little brother had "relieved" himself on (by accident, of course).
