Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi All-
My principal wants all the books turned in before break--we have a large turn over during the holidays and lose lots of books to ppl who mysteriously move and they end up walking off with our books. Anyway, I need to get the teachers help with this so that their kids return the majority of the books. Do you have any ideas on how to get the teachers to help with this? I was thinking jeans pass, gift card...any other ideas??

Thanks,
Janne

Just to begin with, I would hope your teachers would be supportive as they also struggle with getting things returned. I know our teachers would help in any way they could.

That being said, you need to make it as easy on them as possible. We are all extra busy this time of year. Maybe make up reminders that they can just pass out. Have all books due before the last week so that reminders and rounding up of stragglers can happen during the last week. During the last week send out personalized reminders for students who still have not complied.

Also, you could make it a contest to see whose class can return 100% of their books first? Have a special treat or activity for the winning class. Our students and teachers are very competitive and will do almost anything for a stupid spray painted trophy!

Sorry, that's all I have right now. I'll keep thinking. Good luck!

When I was an elementary librarian, I would provide an additional thirty minute class for the classes that returned their books on time. For example, our library will not check out books on the last three days before the break. That will mean that the librarian will have four additional hours since she will not be checking out books. I would offer the classes who return all books an additional class(and maybe popcorn party) during that time. It worked every time!
