This will be my first year teaching ever!! I will be teaching 4th grade even though I did my student teaching in kinder and 2nd. I'm so nervous that I'm starting to have nightmares. Is anyone else so nervous that you are having nightmares?

Yep, I started having nightmares at the beginning of this month. I don't start until after Labor Day. I fluctuate between being so excited I can barely contain myself to so completely overwhelmed that it makes me queasy. lol

I may have to lay off the teacher talk though. I woke DH up a few weeks ago because he was snoring and he shouted, "What grade level?"

Ahahahahaha.

Ha! I can't even get to the nightmare phase of sleep. Last night I could not fall asleep, so many thoughts were racing through my head. I hope it was a one night thing! Best of luck! I will be teaching fourth grade as well.

I found out a few days after Memorial Day that I got this position and from there on I have been having nightmares (not everynight, but pretty regular).

These nightmares consist of me coming the first day of school and not having anything planned or the classroom isn't put together yet. I try to do lame lesson plans, but I know that they aren't real ones. I also have had ones where the teacher I am replacing (she went to a kindergarten position in the same school; this is a 2nd grade position) comes back and teaches lessons because she won't let go.

So yep...I am there with you! I was able to get back into my classroom today after 3 weeks of being away when they were striping, waxing, and buffing the floors. It was a good feeling because I was really freaking out about not being able to get in there and school starting -- we start August 22, but it was just my overthinking.

1dayatatime: "I fluctuate between being so excited I can barely contain myself to so completely overwhelmed that it makes me queasy. lol" - That is so me! That's what I was thinking when I read your post!

Well you may be relieved to know that it is completely common to have these mightmares. I will be starting my 4th year in August and about a month before school starts I have nightmares that usually include some or all of the following elements:
1. Waking up late the first day of school
2. Getting to school and all of the furniture is still stacked in the middle of the room--nothing is set up
3. I have no lessons planned and I cannot think of anything to do
4. The kids are totally rude, and no matter what I do I cannot get them to do anything I say.

I told a collegue about these dreams last year, and she told me still has them at the beginning of the year--and he has been teaching for close to 20 years!

I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one with these nightmares. I haven't had the one where I wake up late on the first day though--WOW!! Mine have all been that I'm standing in the front of the classroom and I can't talk or say anything- and the kids are all laughing at me. Hopefully after this year gets started they will stop.

I am a first year teacher going into 2nd grade. I totally have them! i wouldn't call all of them 'nightmares' some are just 'dreams' but whatever you want to call um I have them both. They range anywhere from good to bad (the 'bad' are always parent related for one reason or another). The dreams include:
* Waking up late on the first day of school.
* Getting to school on the first day and my principal telling me I can't teach - to pack up my things (and no, before you ask, she isn't mean at all - my principal is one of the sweetest people I've ever met!!!!!)
* Parents wanting to take their kids out of my class because they found out I'm a first year teacher (by the way, I look very young so that doesn't help!)
* Parents wanting to take over control of my room because they find out I'm new.
* The students not liking me as a teacher (No, I don't mean in the buddy-buddy way like I am trying to be their best friends and not their teacher, I mean, not like me at all!)

The list just goes on and on~

I would like to know how any one is having nightmares..I can't even seem to relax long enough to sleep!!! As you can see it is a little after 4:00 am...and still not sleeping...I'll eventually get so exhausted I'll pass out...but when I do I don't really remember my dreams...except for the one that they tell me...oh you can't teach your not highly qualified...has anyone else been asked that on their interviews? Anyway....I wish school started late...I just got my job and the first day of school is August 14th..New Teacher In-Service is August 7th...so I am really starting to panic...too much to do...not enough time! Congrats to all!

This will be my 8th year of teaching and I have these nightmares every year! Last night I had the first one of this summer. I was in my classroom, in fourth grade for the first time, (true) and the kids are soooo little and immature, out of control. There are parents everywhere, and we are under construction, (true). Then there is this really, really, tall man, I mean like 9 feet tall, and he tells me that he hopes that the one thing that I will be sure to address this year is........my concentration!

Those were my nightmares!!

I had that nightmare last year before my first year of teaching.. it was the first day of school and nothing was set up, there were no desks in the room so everybody sat on the floor, i didn't have anything planned at all... it made me double sure to make sure I had desks int he room!!

And what's amusing is at the end of the year, we did stack up all our desks and such 3 days before school got out, so the last 2 days we did sit on the floors!!

I am having more this year since I'm moving from 1st grade (11 years) to 5th grade this year. But at any rate I never get much sleep the night before the first day, I keep running through the day in my head! Even teachers that have taught for over 30 years tell me that they still have them too, you guys are so not alone!

I've had nightmares about my class every single year since I started teaching. Every year before school starts, I have nightmares. This past year, I actually had nightmares after school ended, I've *no* idea why!!

Mine usually are about not having enough time to do the plans, or not having control over my class. THis year I am expecting to have worse nightmares, as I have a few really "scary" kids in my class. *sigh*

I start August 1 and the kids come August 8, and I've been having nightmares for a few nights now. Last night I dreamed that the parents and students came for "Meet the Teacher Night" and my room was completely bare. A couple of parents went to the office after and asked for their children to be moved! I know that's just an anxiety dream (my room isn't finished yet), but it seems like I can't get away from thinking about school! It even follows me into my dreams

I haven't been able to sleep in weeks! All my thoughts are on my classroom. Sometimes I fall asleep but all my dreams are about the classroom as well. I am glad I am not the only one is feeling the same way!

I am so glad to know that I am not alone!! I am not having nightmares... I just can't sleep!! I have always been one to go to bed early...single mom...4 kids... I am exhausted by 9pm...but I dont think I have been to sleep before 3am in 2 weeks! No matter who I am with I will just have random outbursts of ideas, questions, concerns, and fears of first grade! My mom just laughs and says "here she goes again"!!

Good luck to everyone... I will pray for sleep for all!!!

My dream

Clip to ScrapBook #18

I am going into my second year teaching and I am a nervous wreck! The dream I have is that I show up unprepared and I don't have a behavior management plan for my class. I part of me wishes I could have had my first week w/ my new class before the summer was over because I knew exactly what I wanted to do. That's not really possible though...

The veteran teachers get nightmares too. It is said that the group coming up to 4th grade this year is a tough group behaviorally. I have heard horror stories from the 3rd grade teachers and the principal. There are times that I al very excited and just can't wait to start the year. Then.....there are those days when I feel like summer just isn't long enough. On those days I go to sleep dreading the start of the year and I wake up in sweating and scared. 12 days left and counting!!! I guess we'll see how it goes. I'm trying not to let others' comments about these children influence me. I will start the year with an open mind and an accepting heart. I hope that's enough.

Veteran Nightmares

Being scared, having nightmares and such is very normal, and extremely exhausting. Do you wake up stressed out? Tired? My aunt, who retired from teaching h.s. after 30 years, said that if I were ever NOT to be nervous, it would be time for a career change. It's year 13 for me and I have just moved back to my homestate after being in another part of the country for 6 years. I have taught grades 3, 4, and 5 as well as been a Gifted Specialist for a junior high, a mentor and supervising teacher for several STs. I am back in my home state, lovely new house, no summer job...should be stress free, but noooo.

Now, I am in a new school in the district I started in 12 years ago and I have to attend all the "new teacher" inservices. I am very apprehensive, not bitter. I am having nightmares at night:
  • My classroom is not ready or is filthy
  • Principal doesn't like me and I don't know why
  • I get lost in these massive housing developments and am late to school on the first day
  • The weirdest one: I get to school and instead of bright-eyed 4th graders, it's my old high school teacher there telling me that she's sorry that I have to come back to high school because I never completed a math course required for graduation. ARGGGGH! I like elementary math, so where that comes from must be really deep down in my psyche!

Yes! This will be my first year as well. I did my student teaching in 3rd and 4th, and will be teaching 2nd!! I have started having nightmares as well. They are all if the first day/week of school being chaotic and horrible! I'm so so so excited but nervous beyond belief. I don't feel like I have enough books for a library, and have not even began to set up my classroom (we start Aug 20th-I haven't gotten my keys yet!!)

I too am having nightmears! I will be teaching 4th grade. I student taught in 2nd grade...and I am very scared of teaching 4th grade! I just am so afraid that they will be mean and rude little children. I am afraid to get things that are to cute to put up in my class cause I don't want them to be to babbyish. Ug. I know I will be fine, and that these 4th graders are only 10 and that is still really young.....but still. I am scared. I keep dreaming that:

1. I have no lessons planned
2. I don't know any ones name
3. No other teachers will talk to me
4. I forgot to set up my classroom

Scary..scary...scary......
