Hi everyone. Just looking for some feedback. I was initially placed in a two week long term assignment in Middle School for 7th and 8th grade Social Studies. However, it kept turning into one more week, then another 3 days, then another week, etc...So far, I have been in this assignment for about 4 weeks, still making regular per diem sub pay. Each day, I am more and more stressed due to lack of support from certain teachers who are supposed to provide me with detailed plans and handouts, and bullying tactics by the Principal. Basically I am only given a very rough outline of plans each morning, (on the morning of) by other teachers who teach same subject and then told to make my own copies of handouts and prepare a lesson for that SAME DAY. Every single day!.

Furthermore, the Principal bursted in my classroom yesterday demanding I stop teaching immediately so I can send him the grades I have been keeping track of so far. Keep in mind I was asking how to submit grades since Day 1, but kept being told that they will get back to me. Then, about an hour later I find out parents are already complaining about their kids' grades and was told by Principal that I was not supposed to give Zeros for missing work! They have a policy that every child deserves a trophy and multiple chances to make up missing work. Anyway, I was also told that this is a TEST to see if I can handle working there full time (even though I dont even want to). And that I must remain more pro-active with the parents because I am being monitored on how well I perform. I felt bullied in a sense because I had no parent contact info (STILL DONT) and wasnt even expecting to be in this position this long.

Anyway, I am tired of coming home in tears every other day and I even had an anxiety attack this past Friday when I got home from dealing with all this BS. There is more, but its just too much to type. Therefore, I sent an email to the sub coordinator who has known me for years giving her One week's notice and I wish to leave this long term position by the end of this week. Keep in mind I never signed a contract, nor wish to work full time. Did I do the right thing? I am fearing consewuences now, but need to look out for my oen sanity. Also, what should I say to both sub coordinator and Principal when asked WHY I dont want to continue with this assignment? Thank you SO much for reading all this and any feedback you can provide.

Unless you gave them a verbal agreement to come in for another week, I think a dayís notice is all you need to give.

Is this the only school where you sub? Can you live without jobs from this particular school? If you donít need the work...I would just burn that bridge and not look back.

Sounds like the principal has made some incorrect assumptions about your goals. You do not need to be hostage to his assumptions.

I told the sub coordinator earlier in the week that I "should" be able to work the next two weeks, and she basically told me that she will just put me in for one more week for now, and go from there. Therefore, I am only technically scheduled for this same assignment for this upcoming week, yet the bullying Principal is expecting me to stick with it for the rest of the month.

I sub at many other schools and even for another district that I'd rather not lose for being away so long. I definitely need the work and the money, but it is not worth the stress of doing a long term job for the same pay. I still wish to sub every day, but for a different class each day.

Yes, the Principal basically didn't give me the resources to do the job properly from Day 1 (not even a grade book), and now that the job is running longer than initially expected, it is blowing up in my face with parents complaining. The Principal admitted he should have given me more resources from the start such as a way to input grades online right away, but at the same time, is threatening me to be more pro-active and not to screw up! All of this for $90/day.

Sounds like you were set up to fail from day one, and lisa53 is correct in that you just need to give a dayís notice. Now, since it sounds like you also sub at other schools in the same district, I would think it best for you to sub for the ONE week the sub coordinator has put in for you. In this way, you can give the principal a one week notice. If he decides to be snarky (highly likely), he might say you can just leave at the end of the workday. Fine. Either way, you will have handled the situation in a professional manner.

I would document, document, document, just in case. I have found that documented evidence comes in handy in a variety of situations. Also, when/if the sub coordinator and the principal ask why you donít want to continue the assignment, you can refer to your written documentation.


You are correct to put this school in your rear view mirror ASAP. Your mental health is certainly worth more than $90 a day. Good luck, and please let us know the update. Good for you for taking care of yourself!

Thanks for the feedback. I am anxiously awaiting the sub coordinator's reply to my email (which may come this evening since she normally checks her work email from home the night before).

I will document, but rather give a more vague reason why I choose not to continue. I may just tell them personal obligations due to the fact I didn't think this assignment would last this long. I dont think I am required to give them much of a reason in the first place, since I am not under contract. I do want to remain as professional as possible because I still wouldn't mind working single day assignments at this same school in the future, and hope to leave this long term on a good note, without upsetting anyone too much, even if they are temporarily disappointed. I just have to pray they take my resignation well with some understanding. I will keep you all posted on how it goes.

Of being a sub. ó you donít have to go back the next day ó or at all.

I remember when I did a long-term sub position that was really difficult. One of the permament teachers said the principal, ďYou know she doesnít have to be here. She doesnít have to show up tomorrow.Ē

Things changed for the better after that.

Too bad one of those teachers doesnít mention that to your principal.

Ugh -- I would think the only reason you need to give is that you have realized that you do not want to do long terms, that you want to do single day assignments. And it's the truth!


I have subbed now for about 5 years, after having my own classroom for about 15. The most I will do is 2 or 3 days in a row, and even then only if I know the teacher and the class. With long terms you have all the stress and hassle of being a regular teacher with sub teacher pay! Nope, and Nope.


Good luck to you. That principal will probably try to make you feel guilty, but take deep breaths and stick to your guns.

I did not hear from the sub coordinator today, so I called her. She seemed very understanding and appreciated the week's notice and said she should have no problem finding soneone else and even thanked me for all my hard work. As far as the Principal, he has been avoiding me all day hiding in his office! . Oh well. I am dying to see what he eventually decides to say to me, IF anything at all.

I turned down 2 long terms for 2019 so far. Both are bad situations going in and I just canít do it anymore. One of them has not been picked up yet and today I got an email basically begging me. My husband says I should call the school set my boundaries and see what happens. School starts back tomorrow, so maybe Iíll give the P a call.

will ask why you are leaving the assignment, deep down he knows he messed up.

If he does ask, you might consider responding (at least in your head) that the long term assignment was a test to see if YOU want to work there full time and you decided against it--full time work.

The joy of subbing is the freedom to choose. The trade off is less money and no assurance of work, but you don't get trapped into unfortunate school situations. You have nothing to regret in leaving a situation in which you got none of the support you requested and were blamed for being ignored by those who should have been supporting you.

You could suggest to the principal that he give the next sub more guidance on grading and a dedicated (in both senses of the word) teacher to help with lesson planning if the position isn't going to be filled this year.

I support your decision. You have no support, and I could not stay in a job where I did not have the lessons prepared beforehand. I did two 3-month long-terms - both ESOL. I got a bump in pay after a week. I had one nightmare class of 20 HS students who talked over me most of the time - but other than that they were manageable because classes were generally small, my department head in one school was extremely helpful, I had very little paperwork to do , admin completely ignored me, and I could pick and choose from the curriculum supplemented by my own ideas.
Unfortunately, none of these LTS jobs never lead to anything permanent.

You should contact the substitute office and HR and ask if there is an additional salary for long term substitute assignments. I expect there is. Apparently, the school is extending you a few days at a time and the paperwork may not be reflecting the fact that you have been in position for a month. You may well be owed retroactive pay and certainly have earned it.

I agree.
I'm retired and I know things change but after 10 days in the same assignment supply teachers were paid their grid placement, retroactive to the first day of the assignment.

Even if you don't keep the position they may owe you for days already worked.
