Listening to what people are already saying about their teaching colleagues and students, I think a lot will depend on the willingness and authority of administrators to enforce regulations and give consequences.

For example, a student who refuses or is unable to ear a mask is sent home. Continued offense means transfer to online classes.

Similar for staff. Continued offense means suspension and can be grounds for termination.

Kind of like zero tolerance for weapons in school.

It's tough, but once people understand that following the rules is required, not optional, perhaps we can focus on teaching and learning.

I think the difficulty lies with the age of the student, as well as our SPED students.

I agree that compliance is a huge concern with young children and with SPED students. If school districts want to have different requirements for them, that's their decision. But whatever policies are set have to be strictly enforced.

With younger children I would allow time for them to learn to wear masks, keep distance, etc. And be kind to them. But in the end, there are rules they MUST follow.

I agree with zero tolerance, especially for adults. It’s one thing for a kid to struggle with the mask, but I expect many staff members will try to “cheat” in various ways. This is what frustrates me the most, adults who know better and choose not to, and I think that’s what will need to be strictly enforced.

safety has to be the main priority. Of course, this depends on whether your district is implementing masks as mandatory or a recommendation.
