Did anything good happen this Christmas?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I have not played Scrabble since I was a kid. We played on Christmas night. Oh, I was not usually good at it either.
I came up with a word that connected making another, getting massive points, but knowing I was leaving a word wide open for big points.
I didn't have the consonant needed to stop it. It was the word "ailed", but it sat on a triple word score and double letter score and made another word going across that was worth a lot .

My dad was a few turns away, but I saw the twinkle in his eye. I could tell he was just holding 1 square and knew he could play off of it. He used to play Poker pretty well, but he has lost his poker face.
When it was his turn, he smiled and put a J on ailed ( down) making it worth a lot more points b/c the J sat on some other word going across.

He is very old, but always jokes he is still : Tarp as shacks!

That move made it so he kicked all our butts in the game!!!
It made it pretty darn cool!

I bet he was so proud of himself and enjoyed being the Scrabble winner for the night. What a fun memory!

What a great story, what a great guy. I love “tarp as shacks.”

Yes, I think it made him feel pretty good like he is on top of things.
OMGoodness, Amiga, he can be a riot! In so many other ways!

I could just imagine everyone around the Scrabble board scheming and planning on how to make the best word for the highest point value. Then I could see your excitement at making your word only to realize that your dad was ready (with an eager twinkle in his eye) to pounce on your word to get his high points with just one letter... How fun for all of you!

Risa, My sister and I do scheme and plan....competitively. We are a less than a year apart. The guys just try to keep up!
If my sis would have built off of the word I made, I would not have been SO happy like I was when my dad got it.
Yeah, the twinkle in his eye, sly smile, and finger on just 1 letter did build up to the pounce. He never said a word, just did it, and let us count all of his points!
It really was fun to see!

Mike, That was funny! My dad tried to pull that playing all over the board at 1st not connecting with any letter. My sister did not let him get away with it. I probably would have let it slide thinking he just didn't understand. She was right though, he fully understood, and was just seeing if he could get away with it!

Summerwillcom, you have to keep an eye on those old guys. They are usually up to their old tricks.

Backgammon. Lots of fun! We also have a 1,000 piece puzzle that is very hard! We also have a game called sequence that is lots of fun. We like to walk every day and do The NY Times crossword puzzle. We do the mini puzzle every day too. I like a lot of the games in The NY Times magazine as well. There is one where you have to list words and we try and get to genius level! Ha ha. I also do needlepoint, and we read a lot.

Mike's coffee- yeah! We " GOT" to watch him. We jokingly and lovingly call him and he refers to himself as The old fart!

Juliet- I used to love playing Backgammon, but it has been so long that I totally forget how to play. I love crosswords and Sudoku puzzles too! I do the challenge lvl, but often have to CHEAT to get started!

Love to learn:
Scattergories is my favorite game, but no1 will play it with me.
Of course, our favorite games are usually b/c we win! We played it as a family a few times.
My son and I were always on the same team. We know each other so well that we always kicked butt at that game. Really bad!!!
Finally, my sister decided we must have cheated and read all of the cards in advance. We did NOT cheat!
It is a fun game, especially when you play w/someone you know really well as a partner!
