If you hate ketchup, does that mean you don’t eat tomatoes or tomato sauce?
I do like ketchup (which the real me still spells catsup) and tomatoes(hardly any calories) and tomato sauce. They seem relatively benign to me (unlike mayonnaise, which to me is a disgusting blob of fat—sorry).
So is it all tomato products you dislike, or just ketchup?
The one time I tried American-style ketchup it was gag-inducingly sweet. Australian-style tomato sauce (which is not a pasta sauce) is quite tart. I find American-style bread (as used in Subway) overly sweet, too.
I love fresh off the vine tomatoes and I do like ketchup, but its not my fav. Hubs hates, hates, hates fresh tomatoes but he eats ketchup, tomato sauce and tomato paste etc. He says he doesnt like the texture of fresh tomatoes. I have never understood this....
No ketchup ever, no fresh tomatoes ever, barely tolerate spaghetti and pizza sauce and put the bare minimum on.
But I also don't like mayo (use a very very small amount to stick the tuna or egg salad together), mustard, relish, hot sauce, salad dressing, sour cream, salsa(and most other extras that are put on food)
Some food preferences make no sense.
I won’t touch ketchup, but I eat tomatoes and tomato sauce.
One of my kids would eat thin spaghetti, but not linguine.
No pizza, no spaghetti sauce, no ketchup/mustard/Mayo. No sauces. Except a cheeseburger, we must order a cheeseburger exactly like this: “I want a cheeseburger with cheese and ketchup only.” (getting him to be ok with the ketchup on his cheeseburger was a process)
Me? Tomatoes and sauces are wonderful. However, I hate the seeds in tomatoes. I remove the seeds as much as I can before eating any fresh tomatoes. Consequently, I’m not a fan of grape or cherry tomatoes...removing the seeds in those takes forever.
I with you. I love ketchup. However, I hate tomatoes and never eat them.
Like GG, I also love mixing mayo with ketchup. I haven't done that though in like 30 years. Back in the day when I was in high school, I pretty much ate fries like that every day. I was also skinny as a rail. Now, I have to watch everything I eat. If I even think about mayo/ketchup mix with fries, I will gain a pound now.
I’ll eat ketchup on occasion. I’d put myself in the very neutral category on it. Ranch dressing is basically its own religion around these parts and I am a devout adherent.
I'll eat it, but it's not my favorite. Fries dipped in ranch are so much better, although obviously very high calorie. My absolute favorite is fries dipped in buffalo sauce and ranch!
I've never liked tomatoes. Ketchup doesn't taste like tomatoes to me. I will tolerate them in salads, but could never imagine just sitting down and eating a tomato. The "goop" in them is also super gross. To be fair, I don't really like any vegetable (yes, I know tomato is technically a fruit, you know what I mean). I make myself eat them because they're healthy.
Pizza sauce is delicious on pizza, if the spices are done right. The preparation makes all the difference. I've never cared for spaghetti. It's not that it's bad, it's just very "blah" to me. I would never waste calories on it.
The only person I really know that had big objections to ketchup (rather than just preferring mustard or mayo or insisting ketchup wasn't allowed on hot dogs) hated it because it had vinegar in it. Nothing to do with the tomatoes.
I will eat ketchup but it’s definitely not a favorite.
I deplore mayo and mustard as well. I also don’t like relish or pickles.
I like fresh tomatoes.
However, not a fan of red pasta sauce and probably haven’t had any in over 10 years (I just did buttered noodles as a kid).
I always ask for light sauce on my pizza.
I use ranch or sour cream on most everything though. I also love almost all fruits/vegetables.
I always joke that I’m not a picky eater except when it comes to condiments.
I don't eat ketchup or tomatoes but I will eat pizza and spaghetti on occasions. I won't even eat mayo, mustard or pickles either. I add a little salt to my fries and eat plain sandwiches. I know it's weird but my mom said even as a kid I wouldn't eat them.
I use to love tomato sandwiches but the past few years I experienced awful acid reflux even with medication. So I no longer eat ketchup or tomato based foods.
The one time I tried American-style ketchup it was gag-inducingly sweet. Australian-style tomato sauce (which is not a pasta sauce) is quite tart. I find American-style bread (as used in Subway) overly sweet, too.
I agree with Tiamat on both the ketchup and bread.
I love mayo on my burger and ketchup on the side to dip the quarters of the burger into (I cut my burger into quarters and my mom got me on that ketchup dipping trick). I prefer ranch or nothing for most fries. I do like tomatoes. My kids all hate tomatoes. I like marinara type sauces a lot. I hate tomato based soups with a passion (especially the kind of all- tomato soup). It smells like puke to me. My daughter, the tomato hater, LOVES tomato soup and has been eating that all the time.
In the cafeteria I had access to in my last job, I loved getting a coconut chicken curry soup and grilled cheese and dipping the grilled cheese into the soup. I miss that meal a lot
My family all doesn't understand my pig preferences. I love love love love bacon and I like pork chops, but I despise ham with every ounce of my being. Texture, maybe? I like my bacon crispy and my chops well-done. My family LOVES ham.
tiamat- I am not surprised the bread and ketchup tasted sweet to you. There is way too much added sugar in so many American foods. It's shocking where sugar is found. And people wonder why our obesity rate is way up there.
I use ketchup on potatoes, but that’s about it. I do not like ketchup on a hot dog, but am ok with it on hamburgers. I think I’m one of those people who continue to eat things in the same way as I first enjoyed them as a kid.
I like tomatoes, and I prefer tomato-based soups and sauces.
Ranch is king here and we put it on everything, but especially on pizza and to dip fries in. Ketchup is for hot dogs and burgers. We eat so many tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes and carrots are my kids favorite veggies--dipped in Ranch of course!
I love tomatoes in almost every form except tomato juice and commercial ketchup. Tomato juice is thick and gloppy and not juice. I would consider using it for cooking but I never have any because ew--tomato juice (even thinking about it, I can't unsquinch my face). Commercial ketchup is ridiculously sweet. I made my own unsweetened ketchup a few years ago and it was wonderful. I wish I could find the recipe again.
of ketchup at all. I also do not eat fresh tomatoes. Yuck! I will however, eat spaghetti sauce and pizza sauce. I pick out the chunks of tomatoes though. No mayo either. When I eat a burger it is just mustard. I do love some ranch! That is good for chicken, fries and all sorts of stuff!
I have read all comments. We thought my sister & DD were weird, but I'm seeing they are more normal that we thought. I won't tell them though!
We always blamed my grandmother who ate tomatoes & ketchup, but not tomato sauce.
My mom didn't like tomatoes and yells a talk tale of having to sit at the table all day because she insisted she liked them and my grandma told her if she took some she had to eat them. Never touched a tomato again until she was in the hospital handling my brother during prime tomato season. As they say.. the rest is history!
I love every kind of tomato in existence, red, yellow, purple, grape, cherry, beefsteak, Roma, dried, etc. I always have them on hand, sitting on the kitchen counter just waiting to be eaten. I also like ketchup, salsa, sauce, paste, and anything else tomato based.
One reason I think some people don’t like tomatoes is because they keep them in the refrigerator where they become mushy and tasteless. Tomatoes should NEVER be refrigerated. Even wrinkled, they taste great when left out on the counter.
I like ketchup but not on hot dogs (I eat them plain). The best ketchup I ever had was a housemate bourbon ketchup from a local distillery. Tangy and delicious! I like pizza sauce/ spaghetti sauce but only if they aren’t chunky. I absolutely hate tomatoes.
I like ketchup but don't have too much of it . Tomato sauce and whole tomatoes are a staple in my pantry and frig. When I have french fries they are the big wedge style and there is ketchup and ranch dip near by ! Mayo is fabulous but I don't use it too often either. In fact I use it for tenderizing chicken more than I use for a sandwich every now and then.
They all taste very different. Even within the categories of ketchup, tomatoes, or tomato sauce, the taste can be drastically different. I like one brand of ketchup or tomato sauce and dislike other brands completely. They all taste different. I honestly think a fresh tomato tastes extremely different than a cooked tomato. I think it is so much so that ketchup and tomato sauce tastes nothing like a fresh tomato to me. The only way I know it is tomato is because it is on the ingredient list or in the name.
As for mayo being a blob of fat, do you use oils, egg yolks, etc? Do you eat butter?
I only eat catsup on French fries and on meatloaf. Don't ask me why just those two things. . . lol! But, since I no longer eat French fries, I haven't had catsup in a while.
Otherwise, I love tomatoes in all forms. My favorite tomatoes are called Sugar Bombs, and they live up to their name.
I do not eat ketchup or tomatoes. I will eat tomato sauce, just enough to cover the pasta. I also eat pizza but always ask for it to be light on the sauce, so I usually end up with no sauce. Growing up I used to put Russan dressing on my pasta instead of sauce, I finally ate the sauce. I like honey mustard on my fries.
