This is the first I've heard of bucket fillers and it seems like a really great program! I'm wondering how you all handle it, especially at the beginning of the year, when some first graders can't spell. What do the messages look like? Also, do I have the right concept? It's not a reward system, it's a teaching strategy? Thanks!

Bucket filling is a wonderful concept that the kids really grasp. At the start of the year I don't have the students write messages. I take 5 minutes at the end of every day and have the children come up and tell the class how someone filled their bucket. That child, and the child who did the bucket filling, come up and fill our class bucket with pompoms.

I love the fact that its not a reward system...the kids genuinely feel good about themselves when they fill eachothers bucket. I do have a 'bucket filler of the week' (someone who I noticed going out of their way to fill a lot of buckets that gets featured on our bulletin board and is my special helper for the week).

Hope that helps a bit....definitely buy or borrow the 2 childrens books on bucket filling (Have you filled a bucket today? and How full is your bucket?) They really get the point across.

Teacher's Clubhouse has some great things you can use for this program at 99 cents a piece!

Is that on-line or in FL? I live in NJ and work in NY and never heard of it, but 99 cents is intriguing!
