Parent complained about me to the superintendent...

My choir concert was musically uninteresting, I allowed students to misbehave on stage and I didn't care about the outcome of the performance. I mean what is wrong with people. Try doing my job. The best part is that this lady is a substitute with the district!!!

A parent should go to you first with any concerns. If the kids are misbehaving on stage that's a hard call. I don't like disciplining during a performance in front of parents. That is one person's opinion. I'm sure that most of the parents enjoyed the performance!

I'm assuming those were her words and opinions. That stinks.

Maybe she is gunning for your job. I've seen that before. Her being a sub, and firing up to district before anyone else pings my *looking for work-dar.*

Or her kid, niece or babysitter is looking.

This is more than you just suck as a teacher. Is she buds with someone in district?

We've have crazy parents that lawyer up and scream at district first, but is is usually *the teacher hates my kid* or *the class hates my special snowflake* or *snowflake didn't get picked for.....*. Never that a concert was supposedly sub par. WTH?

My DD'S vocal music teacher gives her extra special Snowflakes jobs like *stage manager*. This way if they start the Crack Monkey Polka Hour it's not front and center in the 2nd row.

Beside, you are in a no win situation with Behavioral Snowflake. You call him/her out, you have Snowflakes mom all over you afterwards for humiliating her kid.

Uninteresting--that is a personal opinion--are you kidding me?
As for students misbehaving--what specific actions was she referring to? Someone bugging her darling? Students not being quiet during the performance? Students not paying attention to you, the director?
You didn't care about the performance---you were there every day rehearsing, correct? You were there directing the performance? You are disturbed by someone not following chain of command? Yeah--that is not caring...
What did the Super do?
Were you pleased with the students' performance and behavior?
Then don't give her a second thought!

Coffee (actually tea) up my nose, too with "crack monkey polka hour." My new favorite phrase

Don't you wish people would complain to who they actually need to complain to? My guess is that this person didn't really have a complaint, she just wanted to cause a stink for whatever shallow personal reason she has. If nothing more was said by anyone, don't worry about it.

I am a music teacher and have been there. When I taught high school I parents like that. They were complaining before I even had a chance to get home.

If you plan your concerts to meet lesson objectives and curricular goals as well that is all the principal and super want to hear. If you can point that you are meeting these goals with your students then in my opinion you are just fine. 90% of the music I teach has a teaching goal in it.

Remember everyone has their own musical opinion about what they like. If they have a music degree as them to assemble a program idea and all of its curricular goals for your consideration.

Oh by the way when I left that system I had 4 out 5 board members come to my house to try to talk me out of leaving.

I hope the Sup. asked her to speak to you. Maybe next year she can help you. What a jerk!

Does your Super attend concerts?

We always have a super or assist super attend concerts, games, etc, even if they only drop by for 30 min. It would have been wonderful if she was complaining and the super had told her that they attended the concert and thought it was a great production!

First,

Who told you this information. If it was the superintendent him/herself or your principal then you already know what is going to come of it by their reaction. If it was another teacher or parent, it could very well be a rumor. If it was the parent who complained who told you directly, she could just have been threatening to do it but probably won't.

Anyway, it is one person's opinion, and as long as it is not the opinion of the majority of your student's parents, then it is most likely nothing to worry about. Sorry you have to deal with that. I have read your posts over the years and it sounds like districts you have worked for have given you a rough time for no reason.
