annalilbit, I don't know. School is cancelled all week while we try and settle into a new building. The brand new high school was supposed to be ready in a few weeks. They just had nit-picky things to get ready so they are finishing up the absolute necessities during the next 2 days. We move the high school teachers into their new building on Wednesday and we move into the old high school on Thursday. This was the best option to keep us all together.
I am so sorry! We have lava heading straight toward a school I taught at for at least 10 years- I am having a really really hard time with the fact that the school may be gone a a couple of weeks. At least we are having time to prepare and to remove things. I don't know which is worse, watching it slowly happening with nothing you can do to stop it or suddenly. Either way it is absolutely devastating to have your home away from home destroyed.
Oh how devastating!!! I'm so sorry for you and your school community. I certainly hope that the rest of your year gets better. Lots of love and prayers to you and your kiddos.
I was thinking of all those firefighters who worked so hard, only to see the building destroyed despite their efforts. I can't imagine what shock your whole community must be in. My prayers are with you.
I hope no one was injured in the fire! Too bad about the loss of the school and all the materials inside. Where will classes be held now?
Our old school had a fire once when the building was in operation. It was one of the most frightening things in my career! Fortunately, no one was seriously injured and the fire department managed to put out the fire without structural damage. We did have to cancel school and send the kids home early, then had days of school cancelled as well. The furnace had to be replaced and some of the flooring. Some painting had to be done as well, I think. We were so glad we had done all those fire drills because we lost no children in the chaos.
It was terrible standing on the outside of the building in the cold and watching the flames leap into the sky as the black smoke billowed and wondering if there would be some kind of explosion at any minute because we could see that it was near or in the furnace room! The gymnasium was a separate building in those days so we moved the kids into that building and waited for decisions to be made. It was near Christmas, so we did rhythm clapping and later the Music teacher played the piano while we all sang Christmas carols to keep the kids from freaking out. Teachers returned to the building to get kids their coats and book bags so we could send the kids back home on their buses. We had to come back the following January to have our Christmas parties. We missed so many days that year that we had to do extended days in June.
Those pictures were heart breaking to watch. I can only imagine how upsetting this fire has been for you and the entire community. Hope no fire fighters were injured. Since the fire is believed to be electrical it is a blessing that the building was empty at the time.
I am so incredibly sorry for you, the students, and the community. A few years ago, a dear friend's school was flooded. It was destroyed as the water reached 6-7 feet deep. It was a gut-wrenching experience for all involved. I imagine it is the same for you all. My thoughts are with you.
Oh my! That brought tears to my eyes! It reminded me so much of the schools in my area that were devastated by a tornado a little over a year ago. Thankfully they had an entire summer to collect donations, rebuild materials for their classrooms and make arrangements for alternative buildings. They are both starting the year in brand new buildings this year, but it has been a long road for both faculties. My heart goes out to you and your coworkers! So glad nobody was hurt, but I know firsthand how hard it is to put your classroom together after such destruction.
There is an account set up at Wells Fargo for Post Elementary. You can also donate at www.brynnesmiles.org
If you would like to donate scholastic bonus points, I can get you either my account number or I can see if my coworkers would give theirs out. If I get points donated, I am going to go to a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade teacher and let them pick stuff. I was able to get a lot of my books out after the fire but their rooms were totally destroyed.
