Best Series to Rent on Netflix

We are new to Netflix, and (I don't mind the increase in price!)
We just started Dexter (3 episodes in - love it)

What else is a good series to start?

I like to watch shows that have many seasons so that I know it will stay on - rather than a show that has been on for a season.

Thanks!

When I saw your thread I clicked on it specifically to recommend Dexter. Love it!

Since you've already discovered it, Hmmmm... Have you seen X-files? It's an older series but I loved it. I watched it as it originally aired and then last summer I rewatched the entire series (9 seasons) and really enjoyed it.

I am currently watching Fringe. It is really good. I never watched any seasons and they have Season 1 & 2 on dvd right now. This fall *hopefully* before season 4 starts they will release Season 3.

I'm going to keep checking back on this thread because I need some recommendations too.

I second (third??) Dexter. We've watched all episodes possible through streaming and DVD.

Right now I am working my way through Brothers & Sisters while I work out. I like it but DH doesn't. I tried Lost abd Drop Dead Diva.... didn't care for either!

I am excited to see the responses from others. This has been asked before, and I never remember to write down the shows people suggest!

My favorite series:

* Entourage (so much better than I thought, so funny!)
* Mad Men
* The Office (start from the beginning)
* Big Love
* True Blood (I liked the first season and then had to stop watching at the end of season two, as it became too weird)

Ever heard of "Damages"?

It's had 3 seasons so far & I LOVE it! It's a legal drama with soooo many twists my jaw is on the floor 1/2 the time I'm watching. I will warn you that it isn't a show you can watch while doing something else though. I tried to grade some papers and watch an episode once and it just didn't work. Also, it jumps around in time a bit and I was kinda confused after the first episode. I decided to keep watching because I'd heard so many good things, & I am soooo glad I did. I can't wait for the next season!!!!!!!

Current favorites:
Breaking Bad
Sons of Anarchy
Leverage
Drop Dead Diva

If you like British comedies, there's a bunch of them ALWAYS on Netfix, and if you stream, the entire series is usually streaming...

I really liked this show as a whole. Season 3-4 weren't as strong, but the other ones were really good. The show was praised by critics, but didn't get good ratings. As for Dexter, it is a really good show. I didn't care for the season with Jimmy Smits (season 3?), but all of the other ones were excellent.

I don't subscribe to premium channels so this is the only way I get to see a lot of these shows. Here are my faves:

24 - If you didn't watch this while it was on TV, the first several seasons (with the original President Palmer) are the BEST. It was so addicting we had to rent a few DVDs from Blockbuster since we couldn't wait for Netflix. I tend to not like political, action-suspense shows but this was so good! And Kieffer Sutherland? This was a juggernaut of a show so there are more seasons than you will know what to do with.

4400 - Do you like sci fi or are you at least open to it? This is my FAVORITE sci fi show, ever. I liked it way better than the X files and was really disappointed when it was cancelled. Only 3 seasons, but worth watching.

Burn Notice - This is a fun, campy show starring a super cute guy who is trying to figure out why his spy agency "burned" him and left him for dead in Miami. Funny, too. It is stil on the air.

Deadwood - This is not for the faint of heart or sensitive of eyes and ears. Lots of adult content here, but the dialogue and script is so well written. Hard to get into at first, but I liked it so much I eventually purchased seasons 1 and 2.

The Tudors - This is being re-run on TV in a tamer version if you prefer. I'm a Tudor-England nut so this was right up my alley. Good acting, and the guy who plays the Duke of Suffolk? This show is now over but there are at least 3 seasons to keep you busy.

In Treatment - This is a show that allows you to be a fly on the wall as people go to their psychiatric appointments. Very, very well acted (Season 1) and a very different kind of show. Much slower paced than most, but good.

I'm making my way through Brothers and Sisters. I am currently on episode 74 of 87. I think there is one more season, the last one, that still hasn't been released. I am really liking it. It is like a movie that never ends, I have been watching it so much this summer, I feel like I'm a Walker.

Everyone has recommended quite a few great ones...but my hubby and I have been enjoying The United States of Tara quite a bit since we started renting it.

There are 3 seasons and I guess it is being cancelled. But the first 2 seasons that we have watched so far have been not only funny, but intriguing and outlandish as well. It makes for great entertainment!

Mrs. Browns Boys & Queer as Folk

Just out of curiosity, I rented the first DVD of the first season of Queer as Folk because I'd heard a lot about it. I knew several people who loved it.

DH and I ended up renting the whole first season, and then I was chomping at the bit for the second season to come out on DVD. It's been of the air for awhile, but they had five seasons.

I really enjoyed it, which is pretty strange since I'm not a television person in general.

I have literally laughed until I couldn't breathe watching Mrs. Browns Boys. It's an Irish comedy series. I hadn't used an inhaler in years, but I got my prescription renewed after laughing so hard I had an asthma attack.

If you like horror and hot guys, rent Supernatural. It is funny, warm, heartbreaking and scary at the same time.
