A GREAT wellness exam!

I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes last fall. Met with a registered dietician, got a couple good books, checked my glucose levels once/day at various times, used the balanced plate method. Really got serious with a food diary, regular walking, etc. The whole house went on healthy eating! DH HATES to go to the grocery store, so there weren't any "triggers."

My A1c dropped almost a full point and into the "normal" range! HOORAY!

I haven't lost any weight, but my doctor told me not to worry about that. My A1c was great and all the other numbers were too. I will keep on keeping, and hope to see the A1c go down even more.

Hooray for you! I’ve changed my eating habits, too (different reason) and it’s funny how much my mindset has changed. A lot of foods I used to love don’t appeal to me anymore. I was just looking at pictures of food from Texas Roadhouse. I was surprised to find myself horrified. Each of the 6 items contained more calories than I eat on a good day—and more salt than I eat in 4 days. Each. I’m not telling others how to eat, but I love hearing about people, like you, who think about nutrition. Congratulations, Beach Glass.

Congratulations! I have the same issue and I know how hard it is. Good for you!

My A1ci is now 5.6, but I have to work to keep it that way! Iím not overweight. Iím 5í9Ē and 158 lbs. Iíd still like to lose 8 more lbs because I know that would help. Sometimes people push me to eat dessert, bread, etc. I think they think Iím just being vain about my weight. Ugh. They just donít understand. Exercise is also easier in the summer than the winter.

Amiga, I too find it difficult to eat out places. So many things are so unhealthy. I end up paying a lot for salads without cheese and dressing.

I like the book:
Food, What the Heck Should I Eat by Dr. Mark Hyman

Thank you all for the congrats! They mean a lot coming from you all.

The book I use is ďThe Prediabetes Diet Plan: How to Reverse Prediabetes and Prevent Diabetes through Healthy Eating and ExerciseĒ by Hillary Wright. Got it on Amazon.

She really lays it out. Goes into a lot of detail as to the workings of the pancreas, insulin and how it all works. Iím a very data driven person, and her approach appealed to me. Besides the numbers, she also suggests the ďbalanced plateĒ approach which I mostly used.

I kept a food diary, counted my carbs and checked my blood glucose 1x/ day at different times. Found myself not craving snacks or junk. I could have bread and would make it special by having the good artisan stuff from our local bakery.

The registered dietitian was particularly glad I had gotten this book. It was written by a mentor of hers and highly recommends it. I had also purchased one by the ADA, but felt it was too dumbed down for me.
