I can't tell what you're doing with them. Is that pictures that each child brought in from their family?

I think it's a great idea! The kids and parents will be able to see if they know another member of a classmate's family. Sometimes they went to school together, church camp, etc... You never know.

It is a small picture frame of each child and their family. I would try to do the same if I can get us all together haha. Displayed in the class so that students can have a little piece of home with them.... Too young for 5th grade?

I think 5th graders would love seeing their families, too. What a great idea. I just don't have the room for this.

I love this idea! I think that this would be cute in just about any grade. I am planning on borrowing this and using this with my third graders! Thank you so much for the idea!

Only negative I can see is if someone in your room doesn't live with their family (or if they have had a death in the family etc). I think the idea is cute though!

This will be my first time being self contained in a long time. I want to make my class one big family. I would really encourage this.

Just make sure you know all the details about your kids. I had a student last year who was living in a foster care situation and she struggled with family issues. I'm not sure how she would have handled this.

But most years I think it would be great. Cute idea!

I saw this one too. I think it would be just fine--When I was teaching fourth/fifth grade I took pictures of the kids with their parents as they came in for open house. We also took tons of pictures of activities, and pictures at the end of the year. Then I created a slide show with all their pictures and they loved it! We set special effects with music and they were so surprised at how much they had grown...it was a tough year, but so worth to keep those pictures. I would have them display only copies in case one of them is hard to replace, but I think it would work wonderfully. Add the pictures you take through the year, and you have a history! Parents even cried

Picture Frames

Clip to ScrapBook #14

I teach 5th. I have this on my Pinterest board after seeing it on a teacher blog somewhere and I totally plan on trying it out! I'm not sure how it will work out since I'm in a low-income area where some families might not have pictures b/c they move a lot. But I'm certainly going to try.

another idea

TeacherCarrie got me thinking. If some students can't afford or can't get their hands on a picture frame I could stop at the $store. They have those plastic ones that stand up that you just slide the picture through. The tough part might be getting the pictures.. I will try to ask the school about my students living situations first.

Thanks for all of your suggestions and advice! As always

I would also give option of putting pics of them doing things with friends throughout the year or you adding class pics taken throughout the year.

I have never tried it, but my DS's teacher had pictures up all year. She took a picture of each student and their family during Meet the Teacher. Then she made a bulletin board with the pictures afterwards. I thought it was very cute.

I teach 5th garde and I think that they would love this. There are so many things that you could do with this. You could even incorporate it into writing. If you are in a low income area, you could get cheap plastic frames. If it is a problem getting parents to send in pics, you could take pictures at open house of each child and their family.

Baby pictures

Our fourth grade all brought in baby pictures and the rest of the class had to guess who was who.

I had the same problem as a couple of other posters, I did a unit on families, and discovered too late that one of my students had just been removed from her mom's, another's dad was in jail, and it went on from there.

I think it is a very cute Idea. I did a bulletin board at the beginning of the year last year similar to this and the kids all loved it. It was 3rd grade but the 5th grade teacher at my school keeps photos up all year long like that and they love it.

Based on my classes the last few years, I'm not sure I could get a family picture from more than a few families. I could see myself offering to come early/stay late for a week or two to take a family picture for those that don't have one. I fear that some families still might not participate. These concerns might not stop me from trying though! Thanks for passing the idea on!
