JCPenny Store Shopping Experience - WWYD?

So I had a $10 off $25 coupon good for what I bought today. It didn't expire for another 2 days, so everything was all good...or so I thought. I bought a tad over $25, so I'm expecting $10 off. The lady goes to scan the coupon & it doesn't work, despite her trying a couple of times. We both wonder why it doesn't work, then she says, "No problem!" and whips out her 20% off coupon, which worked, HOWEVER, due to the amount I was spending, her coupon was not as big a discount as my coupon would have been had it worked. I bought my 3 items anyway, which I really didn't need, but oh well. What good are coupons if they don't work?! I've had coupons like this before & they worked...actually it didn't work once in the past either.

I'm not the type to raise a fuss & call for the manager, but maybe I should have. I contacted JCPenney via online when I got home & explained the situation, so I'll see what they say soon.

What would you have done?

I would do the same and if I didn't receive a response, I would take my receipt and coupon in to speak with a manager.

I would have commented that the discount is not the same. My experience is that stores that use lots of coupons - Macy's, JC Penny, Fred Meyer, etc - give plenty of leeway to their sales clerks for making it work.

I would have had her call her manager to the check out counter. The manager would have given you the full amount. Plus JC Penney needs you as a customer. They keep closing stores. I hope you get a response!

Things like that catch me off guard. I would have left my purchases at the counter and stewed about it

I am curious what kind of response you will get.

When I said maybe I should have, I mean, NOT raise a fuss, but I could have simply had her call her mganager to check on it. I'll definitely do it next time OR see if I really NEED what I'm buying or not.

For a long time, I didn't care for JCPenney, then the last few yrs, their fashions have really improved & they have good prices. I've bought a ton from them. Hopefully, this kind of thing doesn't keep happening with their coupons, which they give out quite often.

I'll probably start a continuation thread to keep you posted on what they say after a while.

I'm with javamomma. I would have left the items and stewed about it. But then by the time I got home I would have been happy that I still had my money instead of more clothing that I didn't need.

I'm surprised the clerk wasn't able to override the price and give you the $10.00 off.

My DH uses the $10 off $25 all the time. If you read the back of the coupon there are a lot of exclusions. The one he hates the most is that excludes all athletic shoes and Nike products, but I know there are other exclusions. You might want to read the back of the coupon to see if something that you bought didn't count as part of the coupon. If you're like me you will need a magnifying glass to read the small print!

If you look at the fine print on most JC Penney coupons, there are TONS of items you can't use the coupon for. It's incredibly frustrating that they have so many stipulations on these coupons, but it's the way they've been for quite some time. You were probably purchasing items that were not allowed to be used in conjunction with the coupon.

But only JCPenney brand items! They have so many items that you cannot use the coupon on, that it is frustrating! You cannot even combine their 20% off with the $10 off coupon!😡

It makes me mad because these companies make money, even when they have 80% or more of a markdown!

I now just get socks, pillows, and hand towels, all JCPenney brand. I don't buy much else because I like to get things for pennies!!!!

It's not just J.C. Penneys that has exclusions with their coupons. Macy's also has lots of exclusions, too! It's definitely frustrating!

I would have left the items if my coupon did not work. I bough several items in June. A dress I bought was 69.99 and it was on sale for. 40 percent off plus I had a coupon for 20 percent off all my items. The dress rang up full price. I explained to the cashier I did not want it since it was supposed to be 40 percent off and it rang up full price. She said ok no problem and gave me the 40 percent off. They need customers.

JCP may need customers, but the employees in the stores sure don't act like it. They could care less!

Again, I may post an update on what response I get.

Honestly, I think that a lot of cashiers in retail struggle with basic math. They are so used to the machine just doing everything for them that they don't actually think about it. When was the last time you had someone actually count change back to you?

I actually had a similar experience at JCP recently where I had the same coupon, but the girl wanted to give me the 20% off coupon because I was using my JCP card. I had to explain to her that my coupon was actually better. She was so confused because 20 is more than 10. I don't think she understood percents very well.

But... I have always had excellent responses when I have contacted customer service, so I'm sure you will be taken care of.

Yeah, we'll see!

Miss Binney, if they can't figure out that $10 off is often times much better than 20% off depending on how much you buy, then they don't need to have a job. It's the same as a lot of these young people today in the restuarant business. You have to be pretty fast-paced. I call to make phone orders quite a bit & they can't write fast, remember a 2-item list, or hustle fast to save their lives!

When I was their age in my early 20s, I was friendly, thorough, AND had those customers rung up & outta there! These youngsters today just don't have it! (Neither do some older folks!)

Sadly many college educated adults can't figure out percents. I consider that a life skill!
