Recompense - is the first e pronounced as a long e or a short e?

Thanks!

It should be a short e.

Thanks friends! I am the lector at church tomorrow night and this word is in the first reading. I would have pronounced it incorrectly had I not asked.

For what it's worth, when I don't know how to pronounce a word I'll often type it into the google translator and click on the "listen" icon. It's pretty accurate.

Good grief, I say "recon-pense". I reckon it's just harder to say if I use "m" instead of "n". Or maybe it's just Friday night after the first week of school tired and I can't talk straight.
