Update on mom's biopsy

Results were that it is cancer. I dont know any details because I got it from my sister who had just talked to my dad right after he got off the phone with them. They go to consult with a surgeon on Tuesday to make a plan. My mom is still pretty much hysterical like she has been since she went to the doctor and can't be away from my dad's side. He's got to be getting worn out. I have had a cold all week and don't want to expose her obviously. I just hope she can take the plan and go with it with a strong mindset, because so far all she has told me is "I can't". Hopefully the surgeon can ease her mind with what they can do, because all she can think about is her relatives 35 or more years ago and I've told her there are so many more treatments available now that you can't even compare. She's been in mental "flight" mode so I hope she can find the fight.

If it were any of us, she would tell us to believe in ourself but she doesn't believe in herself. im hoping my (big) kiddos can help keep her encouraged.

I'm so sorry. I hope your Mum can listen calmly to the plan that is made for her and participate in it fully. There really is so much more than could be done 35 years ago - my breast cancer and my mother's were 35 years apart, and the difference in treatment and expectations were enormous (and Mum survived to die of something else many years later, even with 1984 treatment).

It is not fun, but it is doable. Best wishes to you all.

I知 so sorry. Yes, cancer treatments have come a long way from 35 years ago. Many treatments can now be targeted to individual patients.

This is tough Claire and I do hope you and your family can help her through the difficult moments. Your mother only knows what her experiences have brought her and now these moments have returned. Take care and know you have my best wishes and prayers for a positive outcome.

I'm very sorry to hear this. As a breast cancer survivor I know you go through a range of emotions. I also felt that I couldn't go through it, but somehow I took one step at a time, relied on my faith and have been fine for five years. My first instinct was to get it out as soon as possible with a lumpectomy.

Praying for your mother and your family to have strength to get through this.

I'm sorry that your family is going through this.

I just prayed for your mom to have a calmer spirit, for your dad to get some relief, and comfort for you as you deal with this from a distance.

Abridge app

Darn. I was hoping for different results--as you were for sure.

There's an app for cell phones, etc. that (with doctor's permission) allows a patient (or maybe your dad?) to record an appointment. Then it transcribes the main parts so that you can read or listen again later. It might be helpful, especially since your mother's not currently processing the new information well. If you decide to use it, experiment in advance.

I am very sorry your dear mom’s diagnosis wasn’t what you were hoping. I hope your mom will come to realize that treatments today are light years better than 35 years ago. I hope she will say, “Yes, I can!” I say that as an eight year survivor. It is so worth fighting!

I知 sorry to hear about the diagnosis.

My mom went through all the emotions with her diagnosis. Sometimes she had them all in the same day. She was so terrified of getting the diagnosis that she didn稚 tell her doctor about a major symptom of her cancer for years. She kept comparing her diagnosis to that of her parents who had cancer in 1990 and 1991, and my dad who had cancer in 2008. There are so many more options now.

Hope things go well for her.

Sorry to hear the news. At least now a plan can develop. There's been so much progress with cancer so hopefully she'll have some choices and will be a fighter and survivor!

I'm so sorry to hear that news. It's got to be a huge mental adjustment for her, and I'm sure it's a journey that will take a little time. I hope she finds her fight soon.

oh wow Claire! I'm so sorry. She needs to know that she will be okay. You're right that there are many advances now more than ever. Can you somehow send positive articles to her? I feel for her and you and your dad.
