Hi, second grade teachers! I hope you are having a great school year!

Tell us: What is something you teach every year in second grade that you particularly look forward to, and why?

Thanks for sharing with us!

I always loved teaching place value to 1,000, because second graders were amazed at the big numbers. Once they caught on to the patterns, they realized how easily they could count really high. They loved making scrolls every year, eventually writing all the numbers from 1-1,000 on blank number grids and taping the pages together into one long marvelous sheet.

This is my first year teaching 2nd grade, but we just finished a measurement unit in math that the kids (and I) loved. It's always fun when you can make math hands-on, and the measurement unit definitely provided a lot of opportunities for hands-on learning.

I always look forward to our life cycle unit.
Everyone gets their own caterpillar to observe its changes. The kids are so excited when they come in each morning to see how their little caterpillar has changed.

We do this unit at the end of the school year in early June.
Maybe that's why I like it so much...

We always incubate 12 eggs and hope for the best! Hatching chicks is a favorite of mine and the students. We discuss the life cycle and caring of the chicks. We keep them for about a week after they hatch and take them out and put on the floor (with plenty of newspaper!) and do little experiments. We try to play different types of music, put up different colored folders around the edge and make predictions, etc. It is the first thing kids ask about on day 1 - "when are we getting the chicks!"

Favorite for second grade

I teach an entire unit on ocean otters. It is our mascot and we live close-ish to Monterey Bay.

My favorite part is hanging a huge panel of blue tulle from the ceiling, then I hang long strands of green roving yarn. Attached to the yarn are the paper bag otter puppets they make and kelp leaves they color.

I even have Wildcare (like the Marine Mammal Center) come out and give a presentation for all the second grade classes.

It's the one thing they all remember.

I love February because there are so many things to celebrate. I make a big deal out the 100th Day of school, Groundshog Day, Presidents Day. Our school has a school wide Chinese Lunar Parade. I also cover Ruby Bridges to go along with Black History month. It really hits them about how people were treated differently because of their skin color. It's a short, but very busy month.

I've always loved teaching American history to my second graders. They have a hard time separating fact from fiction at that age and will sometimes ask, "Did that really happen?" or, "You mean he was a real person?"

I hope they come away with an understanding of the need for brave and courageous people, people who want to do what is right. Maybe I have someone in my class who will be as insightful as Thomas Jefferson, as courageous as Harriet Tubman, as inspirational as MLK.

My favorite thing that I teach in second grade is our Flat Stanley project! I read the book to them and do a listening comprehension packet. I incorporate art by having students make their own flat person and social studies by sending it to a relative or friend somewhere in the US or around the world. It is a great project that I always look forward to and my students are so excited to get their flat person back and learn about where they went.

Insect Life Cycles

Clip to ScrapBook #24

I'm retired now, but I loved starting out the school year with the insect unit. All second graders LOVE science and hands on activities. They started out the year motivated and loving school...all because of the insects. They collected all kinds of specimens on the playground and at home. They each had their own mealworm. We also received the painted butterfly larvae. And my last few years I had a pair of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches in a small plastic cage. Their enthusiasm made me so happy! They learned observation skills and watched for changes in our classroom insects. It was always such a good, happy start to the school year!

I love just about everything about second grade, but one of my favorite projects is during our history unit. The students do oral history projects where they interview an older family member about what their life was like growing up. Watching the kids interact with their parents, grandparents, etc is always so cool, and I love learning new things about my kids! We get such positive feedback from the families, too!

In December I love to teach about Holiday celebrations around the world as we learn about the celebration as well as make a craft.

In November I love to teach about Native Americans and end right before Thanksgiving when the Native Americans and the Pilgrims come together for a special celebration.

Seriously there are so many. I love to teach about nouns in language arts, continents and American symbols in social studies and two digit addition and subtraction in math. Love when that light bulb goes off and they get it!! for some sooner and for others later, but eventually they all get it!

I like teaching social studies and having the students think about their impact on the environment. This is my way of helping the students to think about more than themselves. We look at how their local environment has changed over time to make their life better/easier but how it has changed where we live.

For the past 19 years in second grade, I have gone out every year and collected monarch caterpillars. I bring them back to the classroom, and we watch as they eat milkweed, become chrysalis, and emerge as monarch butterflies. We release them to begin their trek to Mexico. I used to tag them, and one year was excited to be notified that one of ours had been recovered in Mexico!
This is not part of our curriculum, but something I just do. It really hooks the students into learning and also seems to be a community-building experience.

I really love to teach about our local tribal nations because 99% of our students come from the three dominant tribes as well as a slew of others.

I am excited to begin the school year on Monday September 19! We had a long delay due to construction at all the schools in the district.

Wish me luck and say a prayer for me.

I get to co-teach with another 2nd grade class that lost their classroom due to space issues.

raw materials and products

two years in a row I did an activity where students designed a product using raw materials and then wrote up a commercial and did math to find out the price of the item and then they presented the product to the class and parents in a little business pitch. It was really cute and they came up with some great ideas

Constitution Week

I enjoy teaching during Constitution week because I pull out all kinds of replicas that I've collected during trips to Washington, D.C. and Williamsburg, Mt. Vernon, etc. to use when teaching. The kids love it when I wear my bonnet, light the room with battery operated candles and we write with quill pens. I also have a slate, a tin whistle, replicas of money and the Constitution, sealing wax and other things.

I look forward to our life cycle unit. I bring an incubator to see and my class hatches eggs. I teach gifted now but we will still do a life cycle unit.

I love teaching about our country's landmarks and symbols. With all the videos out there, it's like taking a field trip to important places around the U.S.

When I taught 2nd grade in the 90's, each year we taught a dinosaur unit. The students loved it! At the end of the unit, we would have a diorama fair. The parents and students enjoyed walking through classrooms and seeing all of the creations!

Folktale Friday

It started as a way to include folktales needed with common core and became one of the students and mine favorite days of the month. I taught a different Folktale each month, with plenty of activities and video clips.

Life cycle of the butterfly

I raise monarchs in the summer and always started the school year with a caterpillar or two(or more!). Then the following spring we had a science unit in which they all got their own Painted a Lady caterpillar. What kid doesn't get enthused over something like that?

I pretty much love teaching anything science related. Probably my favorite topic is fossils. I wanted to be a paleontologist as a child.

I agree with momteach and others that teaching the life cycle of a caterpillar is really fun. Our caterpillars arrived today and all the kids were so excited! And they can't wait to come back to school tomorrow to check on their caterpillars.

With a background in literacy, I love teaching kids to be confident, fluent readers.

I have been teaching second grade for three years now. I taught first for ten years. I love all subjects in second grade. My absolute favorite would have to be reading. I love literature and really enjoy teaching it to my students.

What I look forward to teaching each year

I love reading to my students and inspiring them to increase their fluency and to read with "voices". I enjoy introducing them to my favorite authors so I try to read books by the same author within a week or two. I also enjoy using reader's theatres and funny poetry to make literacy fun. I read 36 of the American Girl chapter books to them (in addition to other chapter books) and teach history by discussing what is happening at each time period. Some years I have had a Colonial Day, Pioneer Day or Peek into the Past Day but it depends on the behavior of the students whether I have the energy to pull those days off. I also enjoy doing Science experiments with the children.

I love teaching them all about Australian sports stars!
I love teaching about Aussie inventions. They are sooo fascinated with the Hills Hoist clothesline!
I think they also need to be taught religion and get a grip on their spirituality. You can help develop it so tenderly. I find second grade kids quite open to other religions and you can really get them engaged in their beliefs. Similarly, with their emotions and feelings whereby we do meditation after break times. It takes practice but helps so much to keep them nicely balanced and aware of any mood changes.
